I know that the majority of camp sites dont allow camp fires on their sites as this damages the grass.

However, i really want to have a camp fire, just a small one. Is the only alternative to use a fire bucket raised off the ground with bricks or is there a device which allows a small camp fire and also protects the grass that can be folded up and used over and over again?

Barley Meadow Camping and Caravanning Park in Devon rents out fire pits ,you can also buy logs etc,would assume it must be portable...maybe worth contacting them.

I have found that many sites that don't allow fires have no restriction on what fuels your stove.  I like these sort of stoves myself.  ;)

Some perfect stainless steel containers to make them from for £3.99 in Morrisons at the moment.  Woolies and other shops often have various sizes of cheap SS cans in stock.  If you can find two that stack inside each other, use the smaller for the stove and the larger as a billy can.  Cheap, all the macho fun of a fire, and cook your tea on a handfull of pine cones as well.  What more could you want.  Many different design ideas out there as they have been used for years and are still the main (only) stoves available to many people in the world.

We are off this weekend and i checked with our campsite as it did not state either way. They have told me as long as we take a shovel and lift the turf up and replace and tidy after they are happy for us to have a small controlled fire.

Never had a camp fire though so can i hijack and ask if anyone has any advice i.e. where to put in relation to tent depending on wind and how far away etc.

Look at this fellow.....terrific campsite in a beautiful place. Allows fires in firebeds. Pubs along the road are great too!

We use a fire pit and our friends have one which has a BBQ grill on the top.

This can still scorch the grass so we have cut out a piece of that reflective foil stuff that goes behind radiators to protect the grass.

Works a treat and reflects the heat!
