We use an Halagon heater in the awning and find it very effective. and gives a nice warm glow as well. Very safe if knocked over goes off immediatly. You do need a firm, flat surface for it to stand on though.. Wouldn't leave it on overnight though. A Hot water bottie inside sleeping bags is good too.
