Are there any tents that are too big for one pitch on a campsite? We want an 8 man instead of our 5man tent, but someone told us they have had to pay for a second pitch! Has anyone else had this problem?

well i heard the same i got 8 man tent this is first time out with it off to site this weekend but there pitches are big so no problem but think might have some problems at some sites. Some sites can be as small as 8mx8m i would find an area you want to go to do search then give sites a ring and check on pitch sizes.

my tent is 7.5mx4.5m there are bigger 8mans out there

It's mostly the huge spread domes that seem to experience problems with booking large enough pitches, yet there are lots of very large tunnel tents which won't incur additional pitch charges (since they still will fit on a single pitch, because of their regular shape).

There are lots of threads on this, if you do a search (using the icon at the top of this page). Also, there is a thread listing sites which accept very very large tents.

It's all down to personal preference, but I'd always go for a regular shape tent, without bedroom pods sticking out at all angles, since it makes for much better use of pitch space for us.

Best of luck, whatever you decide!

We have 8 man tunnel tent and not had a problem to date, just make sure you mention the size of your tent when you book, if they can't accomodate you on one pitch, find somewhere else.

If you look through the treads of this site , you will find a list of sites that accept big tents. Normally now, if you book a site , you are asked the size of your tent .This can save you disappointment on arrival and it need only cost you a phone call Liddenham is right, it's the shape of the footprint of you tent ,not the area it takes up. Go for a tunnel tent, a big one of this type are no bigger than a caravan and an awning.

Check with the Caravan and Camping club and thier guide lines regarding a tent size and pitch size. This should be the best way to gauge. You may find though that the smaller independant sites will try it on for the extra cash.
