The answer is yes a 12v cooler left on in a stationery car will drain your battery overnight.
The way to get round this is
Freeze 2 pop bottles of water in advance ( remember only fill bottles 3/4 full ...water expands when frozen ) also prepare your ice packs. Anything you are not using the first night and can be frozen should be frozen.
Use cool box on 12v while traveling and any time you go out in the car to give it a boost.
If you don't leave the lid open any more than necessary you should get well over a week in this country unless we get a heat wave.
Mine will last a fortnight but we do go for day trips.
You can always get your ice packs re-frozen on most sites some charge some don't and most supermarkets sell bags of ice. But be aware that for some strange reason they have holes in the bags and as these melt you will find your food floating about in the box. So put the ice bags in another bag.
Hope this helps
