Was thinking of getting one of those coolers that run off the cigarette lighter but was wondering how long they would run before draining the battery. We camp but not keen on ehu. Up to now we have used a cool bag with freezer blocks but they dont last too long. Any info welcome

Never used these but I saw them yesterday and wondered if they'd be any good. We don'thave EHU either and I've been put off the cooler boxes that run off a cigarette lighter in case they do drain the battery.

Our car only sends power to the cigarette lighter when the ignition is on, so we use our cooler with an EHU when we arrive

Bought a 3 way cooler box as i don't use EHU but have rigged it to fit in the trailer and leave it there while camping I put it on 240 v the night before I go, then on 12 volts while travelling. When I reach our campsite I put it onto gas. It takes a lot out of your car battery if the engine isn't running I have a safety voltage monitor which only cost £10 or so. This gadget cuts off the electrics to the cooler if you are stationary for any length of time, and leaves you enough in your battery to start your car .

Our cooler from Woolworths is supposed to cut out after 3 hrs of running whilst the car engine is off. This should not drain the battery. We take no chance though lol and turn if off after an hour and have it running whenever we are in the car.

The answer is yes a 12v cooler  left on in a stationery car will drain your battery overnight.

The way to get round this is

Freeze 2 pop bottles of water in advance ( remember only fill bottles 3/4 full ...water expands when frozen ) also prepare your ice packs.  Anything you are not using the first night and can be frozen should be frozen.

Use cool box on 12v while traveling and any time you go out in the car to give it a boost.

If you don't leave the lid open any more than necessary you should get well over a week in this country unless we get a heat wave.

Mine will last a fortnight but we do go for day trips.

You can always get your ice packs re-frozen  on most sites some charge some don't and most supermarkets sell bags of ice.  But be aware that for some strange reason they have holes in the bags and as these melt you will find your food floating about in the box.  So put the ice bags in another bag.

Hope this helps

Hi Carrots

Just looked at the Towsure reusable (?) ice pack - and can't work out how this can be.  If it's true how many times is it reusable because for £1.75 each I would buy lots as it would solve my cool bag problems. We prefer non EHU  camping but hate having to shop while away on holiday and not sure which coolbox to buy.

This is an interesting question....

Sports instant packs are the ones in which you mix the compounds to get the freezing effect this only works once.   There are ones which can then be reused by putting them in a freezer and they will freeze again.  Which would make them just like a normal ice block.

Is this what they mean by reusable ?

When we were camping last year a couple arrived in a BMW with a tiny tent and left their cool box plugged into the cigarette lighter. Next morning they packed all their gear up and got into the car to leave, but their car battery was flat! Cue all the macho men from the surrounding tents to give them a push, and they were soon on their way! So yes, leaving a cool box plugged in may flatten your battery.

I, too am intrigued by the Towsure ones, could you just buy loads of these and pop them into the cooler as require?. And then, as already asked, how are they reuseable? Great price if they work as it seems they do.

The towsure things apparently work based on the chemical reaction of the gel(?)inside when you mash it. Hubby is a frustrated scientist. I've never seen them before and just wondered if anyone else here had used them. As to how many times they can be reused - no idea. All I know is what it says on the website, and thats not much. But if they do work and are reusable, I would be interested in having some.

I think someone needs to test one these reusable thingies and let us all know if you really can use it over and over again without refreezing it. It certainly sounds as though you can.

trouble with ice packs is that they cost 40p each to refreeze at some sites
just getting the milk out several (ok many) times a day means they dont last a day before melting.
add to that the opening for chilled cans

its either 3 way fridges or EHU mostly for safeties sake as chilled food needs keeping at 3 to 4 degrees even the basic over the counter electric coolboxes cant handle decent sunny weather (whats that you cry)

OH thinks that Oldham is correct in his guess the reusable part involves refreezing the pack - which I think is a bit of a con

I nominate Carrots to be our researcher  test one out for us - then post to let us know the results then we can all flock to Towsure if they're any good.

Thanks for the replys . As for the reusable ice packs i have some heat packs that seem to work in a similar way. They are a sealed plastic pouch with some chemical liquid in them and a small metal plate. you click the metal and the liquid starts to turn to a solid almost if it was instantly freezing but it gives off heat for about an hour. To reset it back to the liquid you boil it for about 3 minutes and it is ready to start again.

At £1.75 plus £4.95 delivery, I'll pass on Towsure but if I see some out and about I will investigate further.
