No, you don't need a hook up to go camping. A lot of people manage perfectly happily with gas for cooking etc, and battery appliances.

If you do go for hook up though buy a proper EHU unit. A home made bodge job from Ebay etc will cost £15 or so, a proper unit with RCD and outdoor rated componants will cost about £50. Most folk would feel their life or that of one of their children was worth the £35 difference.

Also, an increasing number of campsites are making a point of checking to see if you're using a home made EHU or a standard shop one. So you might find yourself in the situation of not being allowed to use an Ebay cheapie and thus either have to buy a standard EHU anyway, or be unexpectedly without electricity that trip. Your choice really!

The best type of EHU is this one.

The best place to buy one is via ebay where you can get one for less than £50.

You can buy them from various places for less than £50, Ebay is not necessarily the best place.

Then in that case, if campsites check EHU we would probably get ours refused as it's not a standard shop bought one, however it was made for us by a friend who is a qualified electrician. Doesn't look like a standard EHU but i have no reason to doubt it being perfectly safe.

Paid £50 for a 3 plug ehu from towsure, money well spent. We have 2 small children and being able to recharge the dvd, power the cool box and toast some bred in minutes makes it worth while. I know the ehus are not for everyone and i respect their views but we like ours and it makes our tent a nicer place to be.

Same here as Bradleymock. Always worth the extra when it comes to electicity. If you dont use it all the time well worth having on board. We were away at easter with 8 inches of snow and we had a fan heater, kettle and fridge and light pluged in and working. we would have died without it.

Good luck.

I have just bought a Powerpart Mobile Mains Kit, 3 sockets for £49.99. It seems good value and does not have all the sockets in a row which is supposed to make it easier to use. Haven't been able to test it yet though. I generally find Go Outdoors very good value.
