Why have an EHU at all?

For me the ethos of camping involves getting as close to nature as possible and if you really can't do without one then maybe camping might not really be your bag.

Just get out there and do without one and see how you find it.You will get a greater sense of satisfaction if you do. What you've never had you you won't miss and I think you'll find it will make precious little difference to your enjoyment!

I disagree, camping is about whatever you want it to be, if that means EHU then have it , if not then dont. I dont but I dont think I am anymore of a 'camper' than someone who uses it

I've never felt the need for EHU, I like to keep my camping simple. The type of sites I prefer don't provide it anyway.  Drinking black coffee is also an advantage, you don't have to have a pint of milk on standby.

Another thing to consider, the EHU pitches are often gathered around the shop or toilet block, is that really where you want to pitch?

Thanks for that everybody.  It's convinced us - NO EHU FOR US!  We're soooo looking forward to our trips!  In fact, more so than any weekend away/holiday so far - just what does that say for spending hundreds of pounds on flights, lots of euros and all the rest!

All the advice is great, I'll look for some LED lights and get some booklight thingies for reading in bed - even if I'm sooo tired, I still need to read, even if it's just a page!

Thanks All.

We have only camped once, last August with borrowed gear and i wasn't even aware EHU existed. Over the winter we have bought all our own kit, incl gas heater for chilly nights and i then joined this forum and learned of 'electric in tents' We will be going non ehu as our first trip isn't until May bank holiday but may consider it so we camp into later Autumn. Will see how we get on first.
