Hi all, New to this forum,

Haven't been camping for about 15 years since I was a kid, back then a 2 person dome tent would do us and it measured about 2 metres square.  Now I have a familly and was looking at the Wynnster Carina 8, overall size not including guys is approx 7.8m x 5.8m to me this seems a huge area.  Not having been to any campsites for years is this size tent acceptable on most sites and what is the average pitch size on most sites?

Cheers - Greg

Phone up the site you want to go on, and tell them the size and shape of your footprint , they will either tell you you have to pay extra for your tent or not. Some charge extra some don't.

I second what corpogreen says. We have the Vermont XL which is 7.7mL x 4.8mW and we have found it best to find a few sites in an area we want to visit, then mail them telling them the size of the tent and ask if they would charge extra for that size. So far this year we have had two sites wanting to charge us double pitch fees, one wanted £33pn BEFORE you added the rest of the fees on, such as extra per child and a fee for the car, but the rest of them have no problem with that size tent and don`t charge extra. Obviously we have chosen the sites that don`t want to rip us off.

Hi greghawkins, Forgot to mention there is a thread in UKCS that has a list of sites that will accept big tents without extra costs. It isn't the area of ground that they want to charge extra for but usually the width of your tent as it takes up more than one pitches width Happy camping.

If you use C&CC sites there is no issue with tents under 5m wide and you can book with their online system, but over that you have to book with the site directly. We have spoken to a couple of people in wider tents on C&CC sites and neither of them had been charged extra.

We have just bought the Wynnster Carina 8 and have booked in at a site for later this year with no problems at all.  Don't think you will have too many problems.

hi we have an outwell sun valley 8 which is about 400 x 740

have sent off for loads of site brochures and on some you have to state which size tent you have as they have larger pitches others not bothered. there were a couple who asked for extra but to be honest the majority where fine

We saw a Montana 12 at the C&CC site at Eskdale last Friday and when we were at Barnard Castle last year we had a Nebraska XL on the pitch next to us. I am assuming in that case that they would accept a Vermont XL?

Saw the same one as you Beezers, - We now want one !! Did we see you Beezers,  we left last Friday in between the rain showers - we were in the field on our own with the Gelert Utah .  C&CC is probably the best way when needing larger pitches.   Our pitch last week was a whole field LOL
