Hi everyone. I've been reading the threads on leaking Ouwell tents. I always understood them to be excellent tents and so bought the 2007 Outwell Oregon 5 for me and my sister to camp in this summer. Haven't had chance to put it up yet with the weather being as it has been , I really hope I haven't bought a bad tent. This will be our third year of camping but we still class ourselves as novices! If it started to leak when we were on holiday we wouldn't have a clue what to do!
The best idea is to put it up before you go on your first camp.(A) to get the hang of putting it up, folding it and putting it back in it's bag and(B) to find out if it leaks by using a hose on it, not direct ,showering like rain. I know there may not be fine enough weather to dry it out before you put it away but if you can then do it .
If you bought it new ,you may do several camps (some hope lol) before it rained. and you may be to late to exchange it.

Hi all.
I am sure I have read on this forum and elsewhere that Nylon based tents should be erected and seams treated before use, unless the seems are factory taped.
When a tent is erected for the first time, all the seems will be stretched and small hole will or can appear and allow water to ingress. top tent makers tape over the seams to stop this.
So surely it is wise, to erect your tent and hose it down to see if it leaks before you go, and if your supplier as included a seam sealer in the kit, will say it may require sealing.
Regards
Rex.

I'm glad I read this. We have a new tent, a Gelert Horizon 6 and haven't had it out of the bag yet. Like the previous writer, I'm also a bit concerned we won't manage to get it out to try it before we go away in a week. I have had a little peek at the instructions and amongst them it recommends that the seams are sealed before use! What if we can't do that before we go? Would we be ok taking the seam sealant with us and doing it when we get there? Does it take long to dry?
PS. Just read this through and realise I sound like a bit of a numpty! Oh dear.
Our Oregon 4 was used in rain virtually every time we camped last summer but we never had any problem with leaks. We did have quite a lot of condensation but are hoping that was down to the exceptionally wet weather as our old dome suffered the same problem for the first time in 8 or 9 years!
I allways keep spray on seamsealer with my camping gear it pays to be prepeard espacialy with a new tent you can use it any time. dont worry a leak is not the end of the world you can usualy sort it with bit of waterproofing spay as long as the fabric is dry on aplication and dont get wet again in a hour or two or as recomended on can.

Hi, Yes, take your Fabsil or whatever you use with you and seal the tent when you put it up on the campsite. I did this last year.

I'm definitely taking seam sealant with me this year - couldn't for the life of me work out what the French equivalent was last year and didn't want to put the wrong chemical on the tent - so ended up using gaffa tape.
It leaks when something is hanging on the little hook in the middle - so obviously something is stretched.
