Hi again
Have you seen the small DeWaard ridge tent that they sell
I think it was on the Song of the paddle forum I saw the picture with its built in fire and chimney coming out of the side, the canvas looked about 5mm thick
Regards
Rex.

Hi again.
Keeping warm and cosy
Beds. The back packers foam rubber Matt, OK for tough young backpackers, Self inflating mattress Will require input from members who have used them. Inflatable beds, lots of choice in price and height. Recommendation please, we have a Coleman double height and is very comfortable, that we use in the small tent. last of all camp beds, some of these as been used in conjunction with an inflatable mattress.
We use anglers JCR Bivvy beds they cost us £70 each but are extremely strong very well insulated and ultra comfortable.
Sleeping Bags, The more you pay the better the bag for strong warm and breathable bags check out the carp fisherman's sleeping bags. inflatable bed insulation, This is a personal choice but like clothing three thin items are better than one thick one.
but I have read of some some fist class recommendations on this forum. What we use is a old blanket first, then an opened out four season Sleeping bag, then the bed, then on top the other old four season sleeping bag this is held in place with a fitted insulated sheet you know the one with sheepskin on, BaaWe then use a four season breathable bag. When you get to our age we do feel the cold so we make double sure .Got any good recommendation on this one
Regards
Rex.

Hi romany
When the poles are set at 45 degrees to a centre storm pole the frame is strong and rigid but as it is not attached to the ground a strong gusts force is taken by the stretch in the guys and the whole tent frame moves together. the bottom of the poles are still free so will move on the elastic pegs around the base of the tent as as the canvas bulges in.

I forgot to say about putting my very strong wind brake hammered into the ground at an angle with the poles all guyed at the side of the car to help deflect the wind, I did discuss this back along in a previous thread.

Thanks for your input
Rex.

Either system works Rex I just can't be bothered to carry poles. Just a quick update on why washing line its plastic coated so does not make the tent leak as opposed to ordinary rope which will

Hi again
Yes I have been thinking how I could strengthen lengthways and your system will do that for me.
Thank you for that, as they say in camping you never stop learning new ways

Of course if its reall bad Rex the beauty of a frame tent is you can bring it down to a kneeling position

Seriously though for everyone out there if you get into really bad weather DO NOT  try and take your tent down at the very least you will lose everything at worst you could get very seriously injured Iv'e seen it happen

Hi again.
Campsite rules and regulations
Pitch sizes.
There is no law laid down to say what size a pitch should be.
Site owners are at liberty to state what size they will make their pitches and what they will charge to camp on their pitch and what to charge you for using on their pitches on their site. If you are prepared to pay what they ask and obey their rules then use their sites, If you think what they are charging is too much and their pitches too small don't go.
But these sites have to abide by the local government rules and regulations that are laid down for caravan and camping sites,
This is basically what effects us as tent campers.
A group of tents that the owners all know each other can be pitched Two Meters Apart. for up to five tents the sixth tent must be six meters away from the five.
Tents that the owners are not known to each other must be three meters apart. this can run continuous, all tents must be pitched six meters away from a caravan or motor home, Any site that advertises washrooms, the washroom must be within 200meters of all the campers.
All ways telephone your intended site if your tent is large and give the make and the footprint size to the booking Clark and ask for confirmation of your booking.
Quite a few sites this year are now stating the maximum size of tents they will accept at their standard price, so use campsite search and check their web sites before you phone. The camping and caravan club most of their site will accept a tent 9X5 meters but they will try to fit larger tents if they can but this year they are asking members to phone the site direct if the tent is over 8x5 to make sure the manager as a vacant site to fit your unit.
Hope that helps
Rex.

Hi all.
Hi think we have covered the main items of camping all that is left is the little things that help.
most tips I can give only covers frame tents that have an exposed internal frame. But I am sure we will get others that have tunnel and dome tents to offer a few Please.
1/Hanging light Buy two LED lights from the pound store the ones that have self adhesive backs then Tie a knot in a length of tape and stick it on the back with the not sticking out then stick the lights together You now have a lightweight hanging light that gives of quite a good light for £2.
2/quick change kitchen roll holder use a short bungee works a treat,
Well my old brain as gone come on you old timers throw in some of your tips
Rex

Hi tony,
My farther bought a marine stores in 1958 and I have been down here ever since except for the years in the army.
But I still call it going home when I go back to Yorkshire, we will be camping near Skipton in July

Rex, some good tips for tent pitching. I do look to pitch near hedges, and not under trees, as I am told rain drips from trees for hours after it has stopped raining.

I think we all need reminding of the basics of a successful pitch, campers new and old. Well done for starting the post.

I've just seen this thread and have been reminded of an incident that happened locally two weekends ago. I was out in town and saw the ambulance and air ambulance on the jetty. A 14 month old kid had been scalded at one of the local campsites. The ambulance had collected the kid from the site and got them to the beach so the air ambulance could get them up to Bristol Children's Hospital. I haven't heard anymore about this, so I can only hope the kid is ok.

First Aid

Make sure you have a basic first aid kit with you. Know where it is and what is in it. Familiarise yourself with basic first aid. Know how to treat cuts, bruises, burns etc and know when to seek further advice or emergency help. Keep the kit stocked. Make sure all the members of your group, including kids, know where it is kept in case of emergencies. It maybe that in an emergency you send a kid to fetch the kit while you stay with the casualty.

Emergencies on site

Different campsites have different instructions on what to do if 999 help is needed. There should be a board in reception telling you the address and phone number of the campsite so you can inform the emergency services. They usually list local doctors, chemists, etc as well in case you need advice. Find this board at the beginning of your stay, in case you need it. You may not have mobile phone signal, so know where the payphone is.

Just wanted to second the first aid kit issue, personally I feel a more comprehensive first aid kit is required when camping due to potentially being further away from medical assistance than normal. Obviously this is only any use if you know what you're doing so have a look here for well run and quite cheap first aid courses.

This site is quite good for first aid kits and supplies.
