We use thermarest roll mats. i bought 2 20 years ago and they are still going.  They are 3/4 length and the kids love them.  I upgraded to a luxury thermarest one which is full length but does take up loads of room. My husband bought an outwell one which is really difficult to pack away, it just won't deflate easily, whereas the thermarest valves are a dream.

I think self inflating mats are superior to air beds but my OH does notlike them. FOr your children a self inflator is warmer and more durable than an airbed. Thermarest are the original and best, though they are pricey compared to other makes. The slim Airic is a good recommendation and I also like the Vango ones too.

Thanks all,

We have taken the advice and bought airmats for the children and will now invest in either the vango nitestar or outwell camper junior bags. Our son also doesn't like his feet confined so square bottom sleeping bag sounds ideal

Just picking up on some earlier comments on this thread, does anyone have any tips on how to stop sliding off the self inflating mats? Currently we just sleep on top of the mats in sleeping bags, and the children especially are soon 3/4 off.

Here's hoping someone out there has had a brainwave!

Can you stick velcro to the mats and the bags?

My son (7) always ends up on the floor - it doesn't seem to bother him in the least.

Maybe it bothers me more than it bothers the kids, but I always think the ground is a bit too cold to be lying on with just a sleeping bag.

My kids usually come off the roll mats but still have a goodnights sleep.  I do put picnic rugs down in the bedroom as carpets so they end up sleeping on the rug.

Same here. Never bothered them yet...At least when they roll off they dont end up underneath them as they would on air beds. hate the thought of them being smothered by the beds.

The better quality self inflators are made of grippy fabric, so sliding is eliminated. Or you can get a piece of non slip material from camping shops (like you use for a rug on a polished floor) and put that on top of the mat.

Hi all,     never seen inflat. airbeds. Do they fold up bigger than airbeds?
