I've been camping a few times and have got the tent up well the right shapre Etc, but have never really got the zips to work as they are always to tight. I have an Peakland Alport Tunnel Tent if this helps
Remember as well that tent poles do actually expand slightly in very hot weather. This means if you pitch your tent drum tight on a cool evening the zips may refuse to close the following hot sunny afternoon. Always give your door area a little slack whenever possible.
I find zips very much a mixed blessing but the alternative of velcro even worse. Both sound like thunder in the silent early hours and we seem to have them on everything. Undoing soggy or even frozen canvas ties in a hurry could be chalenging too.
Its sleeping bag zips that realy get me. Even after reading claims of anti-snag baffles!
Still, camping would be very different without them I supose.
Lol yeah and I think they sound worse when you try and open them really slowly so that you dont disturb people!! Although I cant remember ever being awoken from someone undoing a zip but still at 3.00am when you having go toilet you think that every tent on the field can hear you

oops, that would be me! ALWAYS need loo in middle of night, sorry! ( Dont tend to tell the world though! )
Anyway, my mum always used a lead pencil to lubricate zips, we have done this an many occasions and it does work, WD40 is also meant to be good, applied carefully of course.

Its better to regret things you've done than things you have never tried

A wax candle rubbed over the zips is also a good clean way to lubricate them.
No amount of lubrication will help me with my stuck zips though. After 5 or 10 minuets patiently trying to release them I usually end up pulling as hard as possible having given up on worrying about ripping them.
