I have just got my tent out from the garage in preparation for the bank holiday weekend and have found 3 or 4 small holes in it. I think the last time we used the tent we pitched a bit to close to a rather large bonfire and the flying cinders burnt the holes.

Now me being a lazy git i am thinking, just take some gaffer tape and after we have put the tent up stick some over the holes.

Will this do as a temporary repair and be watertight?

I think the tent is at the end of its life anyway and will be chucked out at the end of the year

Personally, I think that sounds like a perfectly reasonable running repair given the circumstances...and the size of the holes! I effected just such a series of repairs a few years ago when one of our smaller tents blew away when we were decamping and it got caught on a barbed wire fence. Gaffer tape inside and then over the top outside, sandwiching the flysheet. worked fine...looked crap though

If you don't mind how it looks then gaffar/duct tape is a perfectly weatherproof repair. If you can be bothered to round off the corners of the patch or even cut circles this will lessen the tendency for the corners to lift up. You can also get Tenacious Tape which is clear, does the same sort of job but looks better.

Or you can get glue on patches at the camping shop in a variety of colours.

Gaffer tape is it then !

I have found some clear gaffer tape at the back of cupboard so it shouldn't look too bad.

cheers for the replies

Why ruin the looks of a tent with duct tape when you can use Tenacious Tape or Tenacious Patches which are almost invisible and are made specifically for the job in question?

Been a devotee of Duct (or, Duck) tape for years and have mended most things with it. Also made some excellent custom size boxes, covered all over with tape, for important things such as the container that sits in my car door pocket for my pipes. But after learning of Tenacious Tape my world has opened up. I'll now be able to repair loads more things and may have to try it in place of Uhu for shortening jeans and similar. Used Uhu on my Draggin Jeans (Kevlar lined denim biking jeans) three years back and the alteration is still holding.

One rule I always follow for camping is, take Duck tape and cable ties and most weather derived damage can be repaired. Sometimes the reapir is so good I can't be bothered to do a proper job on getting home.

Big question is - how did we manage with Scotch tape and needle/cotton?

Me and her are unbale to go camping this weekend and I've been looking enviously at loaded up cars heading west.

Have fun all.

Tony

duct tape for a quick in field repair if you don have a the repair kit that came with it, but what ever you use it must be done both sides.
