Have you thought about taking it to a cobbler? I had an awning stitched for a few quid, and they did it while I went shopping and called back for it an hour later. If you can get a suitable piece of material to patch it , it would be better than tape, although ductape is good, and theres a stronger one again called gorilla tape.. Is it a piece of webbing like the straps are made of? Like handles on holdalls? luggage straps? But maybe you'd need a bit wider than the width of a strap. If so, Im thinking of the tie down straps you can get for securing stuff to lorries, they sell them in the poundshop. they are about 2-3 inches wide.
