Well we have been away for the weekend to a local campsite. We had asked for a hook-up and the only way they do that is on a touring caravan pitch.

I have moaned in the past about being charged more for the tent at some sites than I would be for a caravan and awning, but I am beginning to see the point of it now.

We had our Monty 6 and it just about filled our pitch, but next to us last night were 2 Diablo 600's. They just had no chance. Their tents both went over the boundaries of their pitches and they were probably a fire hazard.

Even the Monty took up much more of the pitch than I expected- I can really see now what the problems are with big tents. There was a large tent area with lots of room but no hook-ups. Maybe an answer for that site would be to put hook-ups there, but that won't be possible for all sites.

If you go away for a weekend with a tent, try and gear yourself up to run on 12 volts and gas, there are far more pitches and a better choice of places to go .If you are in the C&CC for eg.. your DA has weekends on pitches where you don't have to book  and don't go too  far, and these weekends are really cheap.

Shape is also a consideration.  Tents with bedroom pods can be a problem where pitches are designed for rectangular caravans.

Our Norfolk Lake is a big tent but at 7.7m x 4m it fits into the 8m x 5m standard C&CC pitch.

When you see the huge pitches you get in France (away from the coast) you realise that there is still some way to go with the campsites in this country.

Hi Corpogreen

We're sort of hooked on electric I'm afraid. The forecast in our part of the country on Friday night was 3degrees C, so as far as we are concerned our fan heater was a must.

Brainhertz I wanted a Norfolk Lake but we haven't quite got there yet. The Monty is also quite a good shape, but takes up a lot of room, particularly with all the guys out. Because Britain is much smaller than France we are always going to have smaller sites.

We'll manage to work out okay, by knowing the site and checking in advance, but I now have more sympathy for concerns from site owners about big tents than I had before this weekend.

look at the french pitches. all with electricity and water. no hasle, fenced big pitches and cheaper than ours.

Hi septic, We are in the same predicament as you as regards heating. But we take provisions to go with or without  EHU. We bought a very good calor heater. The only disadvantage is that it has to be switched off at night when we go to bed The electric one can be left on all night as it has a thermostat
