This is the reason I purchased a porta potti (Think its Thetford actually - a lidl cheapy special). I camp alone with my 2 kids and just got stressed about one us needing to go to the loo block in the night. Ours in in the corner of the tent and has a blanket over it in the day (rarely used in the day). At night I put out a loo roll and some toddler hand wipes (antibac ones) and its ready for use.
Up until the eldest was about 6 we used the old potty which was fine when camping with OH as if an adult needed the loo in the night there would still be one in the tent with the kids - my bum is a bit too big for the potty!! LOL First one up in the morning took it to the loos and emptied it as we would at home. Quick wipe with loo roll and an anti bacterial/bleach wipe.
Last summer at a UKCS Imeet had an applause from all the blokes as I strode off toards the loo point with the waste part of my porta loo!!! They said it was a rare sight to see a woaman emptying the loo LOL - have to be honest and say OH does normally do it on the rare trips he comes camping as well!!
I would get a bucket with lid or other cheap similar item. Some members on here have mentioned using cat litter in the bottom to prevent spillages if its knocked over. Line the bucket with a bin liner, chuck in a handful of cat litter and then in the morning just remove the bag and bin it.

Another female here that usually empties the portapotty. Wonderful invention.
A bit unrelated but what does everyone do with waste cooking liquids and water?

We have had the bucket and lid for years, but have upgraded to the kamper khazi this year; mainly because I take my niece camping and she has some disabilities which mean she does not have great balance, especailly once she is sleepy. Therefore the perching over a bucket is tricky for her, so the proper adult sized seat and stability of the khazi have won us over.
It can be used on its own, with a spot of zooflora, or with a WAG bag, and whilst it is bigger than the bucket, it is possible to store things in it for transport so it is preferable to a porta loo.

If you're camped near a wall or fence, where nobody can trip over it, dig a wet sump i.e. a hole about twelve inches deep and two feet square, about the size of your washing up bowl. Lift the turf carefully and keep the earth so that when you pack up you can fill it in and everything will be as you found it.
Also good for weeing in at night but cover the wee with earth when you've finished.
When I'm not around I put a table over the wet sump for additional safety.
Take care.

Take it to the waste disposal point, natch. If you're using a seperate slops bucket for food quality waste water you could of course empty it at the washing up sink, but my bucket is a bit too multi-purpose for that!

If you're on a site with drains and a toilet there's no need for this, and there's never any need to be peeing on a pitch, earth, turf or whatever. It all ends up stinking in hot weather.

Depends on which sort of site you like to camp! Me? Field with minimal or no facilities, lots of space around me and being able to cook over a camp fire. Manicured lawns and two feet between tents? Sounds desperate but I'd rather stay in a hotel! Clubs and entertainment? Rather stay at home!!
Managing wet sumps, camp fires and related hygene? It's what used to be known as "camp craft!"
Take care

We have our loo in the porch! Just the job, or a bucket will do too for night times.

Oh, I can do fires and drainage trenches and building the full fitted kitchen out of whittled branches tied together with obscure knots bit. But p*ssing on a pich that someone else will occupy on the next day if there's a perfectly good loo block or waste disposal point to hand? That's just bad manners.
