We've been looking at getting a new tent. We're torn between two!!! either the outwell vermont xl or the royal bordeux 6 xl. The royal has a hydroststic head of 3000,the outwell has a hydrostatic head of 5000.Is 3000 hh good enough for our british weather or would it be safer to go with the 5000 hh. Anyone got any views or has anyone got either of these tents? thanks ....
Don't worry about this hh thing too much.
Ministry of Defence reckons 800 is waterproof!
Anything from 1500 upwards is fine in UK.
Only relevant if going to Himalayas ( rather than Hartlepool
its the seams that count not the fabric ,modern tents are a bond of nylon and a waterproof plastic so anything over 3000 is a waste of time as it will come in through the seams anyway as the plastic sealing tape is stuck onto a plastic layer and plastic is not the best of things to stick to.
most fabric comes of the same old chinese conveyor belt anyway so its the quality of finish that decides how good a tent is rather than what its made of.
once apon a time nylon let a very fine spray through but thats because it didnt have the bonded layer ,now everything has
never had a leak through the actual fabric of a nylon tent even the cheapest out there but i have had leaks through seams
canvas as far as i know doesn't have a listed HH at all but make perfectly sound tents ,last longer and have far more places it could leak by design.
Thanks for replys. We prefer the look of the royal with the 3000hh, so will probaly go for that.Agree with the leaks coming through seams thing . we've got a frame tent at moment and never had any probs with it leaking.Changing tent cos we want a sig..
2000hh is ok for the ukas i have a few quechuas that have been in downpours and survived. we have a 5000hh and a 3000hh tents as well which are fine as well
if you are concerned about seams leaking then buy some fabsil and give the seams a good dosing with that when the tent goes up in good weather or some seam sealent
