haven't been on for a while wife still in hospital unfortunately

it is looking likely that she will need a wheelchair / frame on her discharge and she still wants to keep up the camping bug as we have spent so much on equipent etc and we as a family really enjoyed our time under canvas/poly stuff

we don't really want to go down the route of tin tenting (the dark side) but may have to bite the bullet

we will check the site search for disable friendly sites and keep our fingers crossed

iHi file28, I hope your wife gets out of hospital soon, and manages to carry on enjoying camping in the tent. there must be plenty of sites to choose from, isn't disabled access becoming a legal requirement most places these days? I don't know if it applies to all campsites as well but the 2 sites i use have ramps to toilet and shower entrances and disabled showers and toilets big enough for wheelchairs too.

I guess that the more hilly sloping sites would be a problem, and maybe you would have to go for one with more facilities perhaps rather than the basic ones.

If you did go over to caravanning you'd still have to consider that though. how about the double height airbeds, may make it easier , though I don't know what disability your wife has. Would she be able to manage in a caravan any better than a tent? I mean getting in and out the door, the step up can be high and narrow doorway  is quite awkward on some?

There are some people who camp in wheelchairs on this site I remember reading posts from someone who's wife has MS and uses a wheelchair.

I hope there will be others who will come and give you more practical adviceand support and wish you and your wife all the best.

Yes, I do feel for File on this problem.  I have found now that I have to do an in-depth "reconnoitre" of the facilities on site beforehand in order to obviate total disappointment.

Shower cubicles for one.  Strewth.  In the name of economy, in many cases my grandchildren would have difficulty in moving around in some!!  There ought to be a minimum size.  Same with the loos.

I wish you the best in your quest File.

Kind regards,

Eric.

Just wanted to add that my best friend is a T1 parapalegic and loves camping. Caravans are out for her as (stated earlier) they are too small for her to move about in and almost impossible for her to be lifted into in the first place (door is far too narrow for her chair)

She has slept on a regular airbed in the past but finda them too cold even with extra blankets. She has now bought a thermarest and has made a fleece slip cover sheet affair to go over it. She also uses a regular duvet from home as she finds getting into sleeping bags tricky. She does need help getting out of bed and into her chair but it sounds as though your wife does have mobility albeit limited which is great.

Loos are sadly not an issue for my friend as she uses a catheter and doesnt need to do the other very often. If the site loos are poor (or non existant) she will use disabled facilities in a pub while out.

I hope you both enjoy your trips and good luck in your wifes recovery.

Our friends little girl is in a chair and they all love camping - she is physically in great shape and far stronger that anyone else her age I know - just her legs didn't develop as usual - when we were looking at going away this year with them I phoned the campsites we were considering to check whether there were any difficulties that they could foresee for us with having her with us - particularly asking about family shower rooms, toilets etc. The law means that everywhere has to be as disabled friendly as possible - and when I called the sites they were all really helpful and would pop us near toilets etc to make it easier. If you wife is able then go for it and just call the site beforehand as most of them are really helpful...all the best

Most of the C&CC sites have excellent disabled facilities with all you could wish for. Plenty of room to get wheelchair access and walk in showers with seats. Just make sure you mention you need disabled facilities when you book and you should be sited on a convenient pitch. You will have your own key to enter and loads of room for carers as well. Worth joining if you are not already a member.

Hi
I will go along with pippa. I have multi joint arthritis
and use the C&C Club sites without any problems. the only bed I can use is the JCR Terry Hearn Cocoon 3 leg Bedchair. this is extremely comfortable and well insulated, the six legs can be adjusted separate, to the height of a domestic bed to make it easier to get in and out as you can safely sit on the edge of the bed, it is light to transport and easy to set up. You can check it out at Fishingwarehouseshop under chairs & bedchairs,
and it is rated to 22 stone. price around £70
Good luck
Rex.

The wife is dissabled and we still go camping. We used to have a tunnel type tent but she needs one with a bit of height now.She uses a  camp bed as found it difficult to get up of an air bed now with a single airbed on top and adjusts the amount of air to suit.Have found the Camping & Caravan Club OK with the facilties they have and never found any problems at all.

we have a 10 year old son with a disability. The only problem we had at the last bank holiday when we went to a C&CC site was the fact that we were on a EHU pitch for a tent which was no where near the disabled loos - even though I had asked to be near to them. You were ok if you were in a caravan because these pitches were near to the disabled loo/bathroom. However, once in the loo there was plenty of room and the shower was plenty big enough for me to shower our son.
