True campers under canvas enjoy setting up camp as much as any other part of the holiday, and when it is time to strike I enjoy this as well.

Oh well that's me doomed as a "true camper" then. I don't much like setting up and I positively loathe striking camp, because it usually means we're going home, to add insult to injury.

I'm with you there Val. I love camping, and would still camp if I won the lotttery, but I'd have better kit, a bigger car, and someone to load it, set up and strike camp for me!

If you could guarantee the weather in the UK, camping close to nature in the peace of the beautiful British countryside would be the best holiday you could have imo .

I just love being out of doors in the fresh air, and provided the site and the weather are both quiet, I never sleep so well as I do in a tent.

I have just come back from a camping trip and totally agree with John.  I am a single parent with a 5 year old who can't do too much to help me.  This was our first trip with a new 4 man dome style tent (I needed some living space for when the wee one goes to bed) and I battle to get the first pole raised.  I was coping OK but it didn't take long for a lovely young man to dash over to help me peg out.  I am fiercly independent but was more than happy to accept a hand.

Whats more when I was packing up this morning my neighbours (who were packed and practically had their car engine running) popped over to help me fold up the tent.  It was really windy and I think the whole thing would have just been chucked in the back of the car otherwise.

That's encouraging, Laurie. I'm thinking about going away for a few days on my own, and I'm sure I wouldn't manage single handed.

We often lend a hand to lone campers if they seem to be struggling, and make them a cuppa if they don't, but it's nice to hear that it's a general thing.

If any of you see a fat lady with 2 small dogs struggling with a big Khyam in the New Forest or Dorset this summer, that'll be me, so give us a hand!
