Still on a huge learning curve here and this forum with all the advice and recommendations has been a great help but now the OH has found a nice site in Belgium that is on the sand dunes so now I have another queston..
What pegs do we use?
Logic tells me wooden but as my knowledge of tent pegs could be written on the back of a postage stamp, I figured I better ask the experts
I cant help you with what tents to use in sand, but when you do get pegs, make sure they are good ones, as cheap pegs are just rubbish! Have found out from experiance! Hope it goes well x
DELTA PEGS - see the endless posts detailing just how brilliant they are and if you say you are a UKCampsite member you get 10%discount too! (or you did when I bought a load of nice yellow oneslast year!)
I love the delta pegs but if I were camping on beach sand I would use big wooden pegs 12" to 24" long as they need to be hammered in deep to take a grip.
Actually Deltas are a sound design, but buy metal, not plastic.
I use long thick steel pegs, very strong & not affected by stony ground. Can be crossed if weather is dire (touchy point at the mo').
But don't rely on the useless bits of wire that come as standard, and when selling a tent on don't forget to keep your strong expensive pegs & pass the new ones on.
Just butting in a bit here. I'm also a newbie. Have just bought a tent (Montana 6) and will be going away for a short break in the next few weeks and after reading all the posts around the weather last weekend I'm also interested in the whole issue of pegs.
Hairywol, you mention crossing pegs and I've heard of this before but don't have the faintest idea what it is? Can you enlighten me?
Deltas are great in most conditions, but given that Rob is working on a modification for use in sandy ground this indicates the originals are still not perfect for this sort of pegging. I do know they're going to have to be good though to beat the big wooden pegs that Bolan is talking about, and which used to be pretty common on the old canvas tents. I've got about a dozen 15" ones dating from decades back but I still use them from time to time.
Thanks for all the replies on peg crossing, makes sense when you think about it. I do like the look of the Deltas though.
I have looked at the videos on erecting and packing the Monty on You Tube. I think I'll need lots of practise before I get anywhere near that expert
Hi all
Delta pegs will be the best if the sand is firm if the sand is soft dig a hole dampen the sand and firm it down, fit the delta pegs then cover with damp sand and firm it down.
alternatly take long stakes wood or metal.
But as we have just seen over the bank holiday it is best to be safe than sorry.
Good luck
Rex.
