have booked a week in the New Forest for my very first camping trip. Am i mad, not sure, kids think its a great idea, we are going to stay in Hollands Wood. Hubby and son will check stuff out on a one night camp in June at some car show, and then its our turn in August. Wish me luck, i have read and reread reviews, keep reading all the interesting stuff on message boards. The more I read, the more I feel I need to know. HELP I'm addicted to this site i think. Maybe i will cancel camping and spend a week reading all these messages instead.
All joking aside I am looking forward to it, but any advice from anyone who has been to Hollands Wood or just general would be appreciated.
I haven't personally stayed at Hollands Wood (yet) but my brother regularly camps there and loves it. As it's a C&CC site you should be able to expect a (relatively!) peaceful camp and a generally well kept site. A word of warning though, make sure you keep all food locked up out the way as I hear the ponies wander freely here and are not averse to a little 'scrumping' from unsuspecting campers Also, take wellies/crocs and cropped trousers as when it rains hard the site can get rather waterlogged. Best to be prepared, eh?
I always recommend Delta pegs for the tent as an essential, they've kept our tent secure in many a high wind, invest in enough to have one for each guying point. You'll find plenty of links to them on this forum.
I camped at Hollands Wood last summer and can offer you some advice
1) choose your pitch carefully, as its a woodland site, the rain tends to run off in small rivers usually under your tent, we found out the hard way, and had to move pitches because of this.
2) If you can pitch as far to the right of the site as you can, as this is further away from the main road and therefore much, much quieter.
