What I want to confirm is do I peg it down? - mushroom pegs??
How much smaller are they than the actual tent?

hi ken

we have the aspen 500 with a footprint what we do is peg it first then put the tent with ground sheet on top of that .with the apsen the footprint is some what bigger than the tent so we then unpeg and roll it under to correct size other wise as just happened to use we did not do that and had heavy rain so the water got between the footprint and the ground sheet.

hope this will be of help yours fran and steve happy camping

Evening Ken,

We have a Khyam Ontario 8 foot print groundsheet, its the same size as the foot print of the tent, the good thing about having one is that the sown in groundsheet stays nice and dry and clean, then I can clean the foot print one later on.

Cheers

Keith

We have the footprint for the 900 and it is bigger than the tent. You peg out the groundsheet (using brass eyelets) and then get your tent up and walk it round until you get the best fit (assuming little wind - ha!) and then you inevitably punch loads of holes in the groundsheet for your ring & pin pegs etc. And you do get loads of water between the two layers - ours is currently waterbed-like.

Can't understand how your footprint groundsheets are bigger than the tents they're made for!!
I have a Montana 12 groundsheet which is about 6" smaller than the tent all around so you don't get water between the two. You do peg it down first and it then gives you a position for the tent in your pitch.
When you take the tent down it should be bone dry underneath and only the groundsheet wet and covered in mud!

The Vango footprints do seem to be larger than the tents

I tuck mine back under when I'm pegging out to prevent water trapping.

we always peg are one down or it will just blow away before you can get the tent out of the car.

it’s make pitching the tent so much easier that without it. with are last tent 9 out of 10 time I would end up having to move the tent as it did not fit where we had put it but with the footprint you know exactly how big it is and can move it round till you are happy much easier than moving a hole tent.

worth every penny

Some intersting reply's there - thanks
I'll be pegging mine out then as mentioned it will help decide exactly where the tent will be pitched, will then unpeg it and roll the excess underneath the tent, the whole idea of the groundsheet is to stop your sig from getting wet, dirty etc as well as protecting the sig.
Maybe it;s a good thing being a little bigger, probably less chance of water getting between if its rolled up at the edges rather than being laid flat

Your groundsheet needs to be smaller than the tent all around , if using it under the tent. The punching of holes is probably also causing water to leak up fom the ground to come in between the two layers. Or any groundsheet sticking out is allowing water to run in. There's not much point having it under the tent if its going to collect water, surely the whole point is to keep the sig clean and dry, so not having to clean it (except maybe a little wipe with a towel around the edges) when packing up?

I have never had a problem with water getting between the sig and footprint, even in the torrential rain last weekend.

We've just got back from a week away with our Outwell Vermont XL, with footprint groundsheet, and ours pegs out first, and definitely does not stick outside the tent - that would, surely, defeat the whole object? :-$

sorry! no, just normal metal pegs - the pegs don't actually go under the inner tents, just under the canvas, if you know what I mean!
