If I couldn`t get to a site before 8pm, 9pm at the very latest, that`s with allowing for delays etc, I wouldn`t plan to arrive that night. Of course there is always the unforseen circumstance, flat tyre, road accident etc that could make you a lot later than expected. If I had to pitch late, I would do it as quickly and quietly as possible and just set up camp using the bare minimum of equipment, sleeping bags, mattresses etc and leave the rest until morning.

As for sleeping in the car...............that`s fine if you have space, but if anyojne is like us and most people are, the car is jammed full of gear and it would be impossible to sleep in!

Let's face it, sometimes people are going to be delayed through no fault of their own. But then they've got to be a bit thoughtful id it's late at night.

For myself, people pitching anything up to 11-ish isn't going to bother me 'cos I'll still be up. But then my kids have flown the coop.

But surely no-one can complain at 9 or 10 - pitchers shouldn't make that much noise and in any case campsites' quiet rules pitch in at around 11 - 11.30.

The answer should surely be (and I've suffered too from revellers shouting at 3.00am) that campsites enforce their rules on quiet. Noisy late-night campers engender more complaints than anything else, and it surely isn't beyond the call of duty for a campsite owner or manager to do the rounds at midnight.

On my last camping trip over the Bank Holiday week-end we didn't arrive at the campsite until after 12 midnight. Now I know that this is far from ideal but the M25 on the Friday evening was horrendous and by the time we got to the Devon campsite it was well into the night!

I did my best and managed to put the tent up as quickly and as quietly as I could but I couldn't help feeling a little guilty and felt really silly putting a tent up at that time, especially as it had just started to drizzle!

I was wondering if any of my fellow campers have had similar experiences. I would not normally arrive on site at that sort of time but I was determined to put the tent up rather than book into the nearest  Travelodge!

Was I right? What would you have done in that situation? The owners didn't seem to mind as they had long since gone to bed!

I would've opted for the Travelodge - hubby and I have enough arguements putting up the tent when it's light ha ha.

Hi all
No camper, I am sure plans to arrive in the dark, so if they unfotunatly do, and they make a noise putting up their tent, so what is the problem. If I was awake I would ask if they would like a cup of tea, they will soon have it up and you can go back to sleep.
Honestly I can not see a problem with it.
Regards
Rex.

Hi Rex! Greetings of the new season to you!

You sound like the ideal fellow camper. You would probably put up with a lot more noise than I would ever make arriving in the middle of the night but it is nice to think that there are some campers out there as tolerant and understanding as yourself. That is not to say that you should have to put up with it but when it does happen on the odd occasion there is usually a story behind it!

I think we are all in agreement on that one Rex - the problem for nubian is that she did plan to arrive in the dark, and was bound to be really late.

however, don't want to harp on about it. Suffice to say that its a reminder to all of us to think about potential delays and to check travel times - I usually use the AA for the UK and mappy.fr for France, both are fairly accurate for a 'normal' day and then you have to add on the bank holiday traffic factor. Realistically if the AA says its gonna take 2hrs then on a Friday you would need to allow extra anyway as Fridays are always the worst night and you are going on a bank holiday Friday night you have to allow for 3hrs - and thats assuming no flat tyres etc.   Same thing in reverse for a Monday morning.

I feel sorry for nubian as it sounds like a couple of nights in a travellodge would have been a lot less stressful way of doing the football tournament, and probably would have been not much more expensive than a bank holiday campsite where they insist on a 3-ight stay it wasn't exactly a great weekend for camping anyway - but then we all can be wise after the event!

i like to be at the site no matter where it is by 2pm. i live in norfolk and no where is easy to get to!!  we are off to the lizard on sunday 15th and we will be leaving by 6am. holiday is booked or an early shift at work so we are all ready to go. whilst i understand being late cant always be avoided there are plenty of things that can be organised to prevent this happening. anyway i like to be a little tipsy by 9pm so i dont hear anything anyway!!

We've just come back from Isle of Wight. To save money, we took a night ferry - well 4.30am. actually, which meant that we would reach the campsite at around 5.15am. We drove past the site & parked up on the downs until 8am. then drove to the site, walked the pitches, and started pitching at around 8.45am.

We couldn't sleep in the car while we were parked on the downs, as we were too loaded up with gear, so we had a little walk to stretch our legs, then I settled with a book whilst hubby used his binoculars.

This is a routine we do every year when we go to the IOW. However, on a couple of occasions when we have travelled up to Scotland, we've pitched the tent when we arrived. There's never been more than a couple of motor-homes on the site, so we've pitched right at top end, away from them. We've been lucky, both times, that the ground was quite soft & it wasn't blowing a gale, so we pitched the tent quietly & pushed the pegs in with our boots. Hubby used a hand pump for the airbed. A quick cup of tea, & we got into our sleeping bags & settled down for the night. We did have to almost re-pitch the tent the next morning - removing all the pegs to put them in at a 45^ angle and lobbed them in with the mallet. Then unloaded the rest of the equipment & arranged it in the tent. We made a point of apologising to the 'caravanetters' for any disturbance we may have caused them - they said they hadn't heard a thing. So it is possible to pitch quietly when really necessary.

As I sit up reading till around 1am when we're camping (a book is a substitute for my puter), I'd be quite happy to lend a hand, or put the kettle on, if someone turned up late & was genuinely trying to pitch quietly.

Some good ideas there JK98 but not very practicable with kids in tow!
