If I couldn`t get to a site before 8pm, 9pm at the very latest, that`s with allowing for delays etc, I wouldn`t plan to arrive that night. Of course there is always the unforseen circumstance, flat tyre, road accident etc that could make you a lot later than expected. If I had to pitch late, I would do it as quickly and quietly as possible and just set up camp using the bare minimum of equipment, sleeping bags, mattresses etc and leave the rest until morning.
As for sleeping in the car...............that`s fine if you have space, but if anyojne is like us and most people are, the car is jammed full of gear and it would be impossible to sleep in!

On my last camping trip over the Bank Holiday week-end we didn't arrive at the campsite until after 12 midnight. Now I know that this is far from ideal but the M25 on the Friday evening was horrendous and by the time we got to the Devon campsite it was well into the night!
I did my best and managed to put the tent up as quickly and as quietly as I could but I couldn't help feeling a little guilty and felt really silly putting a tent up at that time, especially as it had just started to drizzle!
I was wondering if any of my fellow campers have had similar experiences. I would not normally arrive on site at that sort of time but I was determined to put the tent up rather than book into the nearest Travelodge!
Was I right? What would you have done in that situation? The owners didn't seem to mind as they had long since gone to bed!
I would've opted for the Travelodge - hubby and I have enough arguements putting up the tent when it's light ha ha.

We've just come back from Isle of Wight. To save money, we took a night ferry - well 4.30am. actually, which meant that we would reach the campsite at around 5.15am. We drove past the site & parked up on the downs until 8am. then drove to the site, walked the pitches, and started pitching at around 8.45am.
We couldn't sleep in the car while we were parked on the downs, as we were too loaded up with gear, so we had a little walk to stretch our legs, then I settled with a book whilst hubby used his binoculars.
This is a routine we do every year when we go to the IOW. However, on a couple of occasions when we have travelled up to Scotland, we've pitched the tent when we arrived. There's never been more than a couple of motor-homes on the site, so we've pitched right at top end, away from them. We've been lucky, both times, that the ground was quite soft & it wasn't blowing a gale, so we pitched the tent quietly & pushed the pegs in with our boots. Hubby used a hand pump for the airbed. A quick cup of tea, & we got into our sleeping bags & settled down for the night. We did have to almost re-pitch the tent the next morning - removing all the pegs to put them in at a 45^ angle and lobbed them in with the mallet. Then unloaded the rest of the equipment & arranged it in the tent. We made a point of apologising to the 'caravanetters' for any disturbance we may have caused them - they said they hadn't heard a thing. So it is possible to pitch quietly when really necessary.
As I sit up reading till around 1am when we're camping (a book is a substitute for my puter), I'd be quite happy to lend a hand, or put the kettle on, if someone turned up late & was genuinely trying to pitch quietly.

Some good ideas there JK98 but not very practicable with kids in tow!
