I would suggest to take an old clothes softner bottle, they have quite a big hole to point percy in, and have a tight lid so you could dispose in the morning! This is a solution I used for my two boys who never need the loo at home but do when camping (must be the cold!!!)

(not sure about this solution if you have girls though)

Panic stations!

Being a campie newbie and so far haven't suffered the 2am call, I feel I need to be prepared for this and will have to purchase a collecting device for such an eventuality.

There is a device called a Shewee that enables girls to do just the same!

A friend of mine found it hard to get on with though, and instead bought herself a female urinal bottle from a shop that sold everythgin from incontinence aids to wheelchairs.

I'm with the people who thinks it would be disgusting to do that!  My son is 13 now but I would never have let him do that. Its not very nice to pitch up by some bushes or hedge and think that people have been using them as a toilet even if it was only the odd occasion, if everyone thought 'just the once is ok' I'm sure the campsites wouldn't be very pleasant places to stay. We don't have a bucket or anything and if any of us need the toilet in the middle of the night no matter how far away we are from the toilets and whatever the weather is like we just automatically get a coat on and toddle off to the loos.

My personal opinion is respect and consideration for the campsite and other campers, the toilets (not the bushes) are there to be used, there is no excuse and if it is a problem then buy a flippin bucket for goodness sake and teach your kids the right thing to do!

I have this in the boot of the car and have used it on more than one ocassion for grandkids so know it works a treat for either sex.

Truth be told my oh has gone off the beaten track and used this in an emergency and it  has a lid so all safe and sound 'til you empty it.

Small enough for camping emergencies - brill little device, for a fiver you wont be disappointed....

Rexgrant, on eBay now bidding for a Porta Potti 345. If that fails, it's going to be a luggable loo or a kampa khazi!

I must say reading all the veiws expressed in this thread as it has progressed has changed my mine from 'it's quite OK to do an occasional one in the bush' to thinking it's not so nice if many people do an occasional one in the same place. Campsites are the great outdoors but they do need to be respected so everyone can enjoy them time and time again.

Our kampa khazi is one of my best ever camping buys, but I do think it makes everyone a bit lazy and it's probably used more than is strictly needed!

Sabalias, the kampa khazi doesn't really take up much room in the car as it's hollow. I put our dirty laundry in it for the journey home, once it's been emptied, swilled out with disinfectant and dried.
