Hi I've never posted on here before but was hoping someone could give me a tip. We went camping at half term for the first time since last year and found mildew marks in places on our tent. It's our own fault for packing up in the rain and forgetting to dry it out at home .I was just wondering if anyone knew of anything I could use to get rid of the marks that won't damage the fabric. Most of the ones I looked at in the supermarket are not for use on fabrics. Any tips greatfully received,
Thanks

Give Vango a call, form my experience they are very helpful and they may be able to recommend something.

Hope it gets sorted

I know I will get a good verbel beating for admitting to this but -

I had the same problem, the inner tent was a cotton/polyester material and had lots of mildew marks on it, as it was quite old and could be bined if it did not work I made up a weak bleach solution hung the inner from the washing line and gave it a good scrub. It came up like new, and has done me another 2 years.

Don't try it on the fly sheet though even I'm not that daft.

Yes, you can bleach the inners with weak Milton and then rinse it about 20 times. Don't use detergent on tents, btw, but if you really feel it needs cleaning after the bleach then use a weak soap solution, and rinse well again. A nailbrush is good for this, and the best way to rinse is to put the inner ofer the washing line and use a hose.

As for the flysheet, only thing you can use on that is water and a soft clean brush, like a child's toothbrush. No chemical treatments, unless you want to have to reproof the entire tent and that's a pig of a job. If it's a sunny day then the sun will bleach out the residual marks eventually.

Thanks for the replies. I will try using a mild solution of milton on the worst bits on the inner and see what happens.

Do not do this do not do this!

Silly question time but what effect would one of the home steaming systems have on mildew, anyone tried?

hiya, why not do this? Luckily i've not got round to doing anything yet. Will give Vango a call. But to be honest think I can live with it so not too much of a problem. Will wipe the worst of it off with water and let the sun do it's job. Will make sure I remember to dry the tent out in future though. Not sure about using steam.though.

To quote the "experts"

MOULD OR MILDEW - Check for any mould or mildew. Because mould is a living organism it needs to be killed off or it will spread and become worse. A dilute solution of a sterilising fluid such as Milton is ideal for this ( One part sterilising fluid to ten parts water should be satisfactory ). You should carefully sponge the solution onto the mould and then after half an hour rinse off with cold clean water. It is a very good idea to test a section of fabric that is inconspicuous before treating other areas. Never pack your tent away when it is damp; this is a classic way of encouraging mildew.
