Hi all

so i've read all the topics on this, but seriously, if you are sensible is it ok to cook in the tent?  And what tents do other people have that they cook in?

TIA

Hi,

We have a Gelert Alaska tunnel tent. When the weather is bad we alsways cook inside, although we do not have children. We keep the stove away from the sides and always stand or sit close by when the stove is on, we also always have the extinguisher and water to hand. I know a lot of people don't & won't cook in the tent but i think it is upto you and as long as you are sensible i don't see why not!!

Thanks Jo, we don't have kids either, and i used to camp with parents from being about 3 and they always cooked in tent, so i'm thinking its ok as long as don't leave cooker unattended etc.

Any more thoughts?

on our nylon tents we merely put a door up on its poles and put a windbreak around it and cook under it ,in the canvas jobbies we cook indoors in the kitchen extension

I have cooked in one of the Aldi 6 man tents bought a few years ago.

The middle section had enough space. The weather was bad and we had eaten out the night before so didn't want to do 2 nights out in a row on a budget holiday.

When it rained on the lastnight of the holiday (BBQ a tradition) we went to the closed bar on a franch site and used their covered area and hard wood furniture.

We had TV room, toilets, internet point. Not bad for a tent trip!

Can I also suggest that if you cook in your tent you place yourselves between the stove and the door.  In other words, if things go tits up and the tent catches fire, you have an escape route.  The last thing you want to do is cut your only means of escape off and have to try and cut your way out of a tent using the wooden spoon you had in your hand just prior to the tent going up.

Perfectly safe to cook in a canvas tent especially if it has a dedicated cooking area. Just use a bit of common sense and don't leave it unattended.

Hi

I have also seen the scary posts on here showing fire in tents and we usually cook just outside the tent using the door as a canopy and a windbreak around. However on our last holiday the weather was terrible and I had to cook indoors on the last day. I use a portable induction hob so no worries about an open flame and our tent does have 3 exit doors so plenty of escapes if needed. We made sure the cooking stand was away from the side of the tent and everything was fine. However due to our unreliable english weather I have now ordered one of these so I can use this as a utility tent and not have to worry about rain etc.  (just hope I don't get charged extra on the pitch for it

We have a Hartford XXL with the front canopy and we cook under that near the open end whilst on we never leave unattended due to the two year old thats into everything.

We are also looking into purchasing a utility tent for the cooking or the Outwell day tent that her indoors liked.

we often cook in our tent if needed, usually with the large front door open, but would always have an exit option, never had any issues. but if it's nice then will cook outside. it's all about being careful

we bought a khyam canopy windbreak, i dont really like the idea of the entire tent smelling of last nights tea so i can now cook all yaer round outside.

You can shut it down to a cube if you really need to. small compact and handy, just like me!!
