Talking about cold KIA ("know it all", Rex's new nick-name), I've just come up from the garden, having spent an hour in just my shorts and tee-shirt to test out how cold it is likely to be at my planned camp next year.  I haven't camped for 40 odd yrs btw.

I am still thawing out!

The reason for my inane experiment is because as we will be trying to syncronise our waking hours to fit into the sun's clock, it is very likely we (4 kids, 3 adults) will be hitting the sack when the sun goes down and getting up in the early hours of the morning and I am worried about them (especially the kids) not being able to enjoy the birds tweeting etc., due to the cold.

Sorry Rex to confuse you by my inadaquate explanation, but what I meant was when the kids first awake in the early morning and sleepily drift into an open canopy area, say at 6 am, it will be very cold (as I found out this morning).

Naturally, I will be up to greet them, but this will be before I get the log fire raging and breakfast on the go.

Rex, too many cold nights spent out on exercise during my time in the army. Sleeping bag inside gortex bivvy bag in the pouring rain kept me dry, other times we just slept in a trench or under a basher.  My camping escapdes have been nothing to compare, very comfortable in comparison.....

Nosjon, those bags look more gimmic than paractical although I do understand why you would consider them for first thing in the morning for detatching the bottom part. I would assume that if these are a genuine ex millitary kit then they would be too big for kids anayway, I have never liked German military kit, although their boots are good.  Some nice fitting fleecy should do the trick for cold mornings...

Awww, thank you for that kind advice Bolan, although I have found with my fleece jacket it is nice and warm until there is a dreaded cool/cold wind or breeze which immediately negates it's effectiveness.

Nosjon i have a german army sleping bag and bolan is spot on, they are a gimmic on the couple of occasions i have used it ive never been comfortable.

Going back to the point...........

Our coldest night camping was the weekend after easter in Priddy, Cheddar.

Snowed overnight and opened the tent to a lovely silent campsite.....(see image in profile)

Lovely in a canvas I imagine, however we only had our nylon outwell, bit nippy inside and out!!
