Hi all.
We all must be able to remember the coldest night we have had under canvas. For me it was in 197? A carp anglers wife from Bristol had just made me my first proper fitting bivvy that went over my 50" brolly no door but it really did keep the rain off, my bed was one of those two leg lightweight blue loungers and I was using my old Ex military Scandinavian bivvy bag, 2 nights in January at combwich ponds By 0200 hrs my lines were frozen solid in the margins, and I was snuggled up in all my cold weather fishing gear, in my bivvy bag and a old blanket out of the car boot. and I could just manage to stay there and for the first time I really did not want to get a run, that was cold that night, realy cold
Rex.

Talking about cold KIA ("know it all", Rex's new nick-name), I've just come up from the garden, having spent an hour in just my shorts and tee-shirt to test out how cold it is likely to be at my planned camp next year.  I haven't camped for 40 odd yrs btw.

I am still thawing out!

The reason for my inane experiment is because as we will be trying to syncronise our waking hours to fit into the sun's clock, it is very likely we (4 kids, 3 adults) will be hitting the sack when the sun goes down and getting up in the early hours of the morning and I am worried about them (especially the kids) not being able to enjoy the birds tweeting etc., due to the cold.

Me, being sub-normal have found these http://www.worldofsurplus.com/shopscr1730.html and wondered whether any of the wise heads on this forum and make any suggestions.

Eric.

Hi nosjon.
Myself I can see a problem of kids overheating in that type of bag.
We all know that when you first go into your bag it is cold for a while but then it warms up and a lot of us open the zip or fold them bag down a bit. Children wriggle out if they get hot.
The child will not be able to do this in the proposed type bag.
Regards
Rex.

Yes, but Rex, if you look closer the bottom bit can zip off.

Hi Eric
You asked my opinion I gave it. And how can a 3 year old child who is fast asleep remove it, if the child overheats are you going to stay awake all night to do this.
Regards
Rex.

Sorry Rex to confuse you by my inadaquate explanation, but what I meant was when the kids first awake in the early morning and sleepily drift into an open canopy area, say at 6 am, it will be very cold (as I found out this morning).

Naturally, I will be up to greet them, but this will be before I get the log fire raging and breakfast on the go.

Anyway, thanks for your kind opinion --- appreciated.

Eric.

Rex, too many cold nights spent out on exercise during my time in the army. Sleeping bag inside gortex bivvy bag in the pouring rain kept me dry, other times we just slept in a trench or under a basher.  My camping escapdes have been nothing to compare, very comfortable in comparison.....

Nosjon, those bags look more gimmic than paractical although I do understand why you would consider them for first thing in the morning for detatching the bottom part. I would assume that if these are a genuine ex millitary kit then they would be too big for kids anayway, I have never liked German military kit, although their boots are good.  Some nice fitting fleecy should do the trick for cold mornings...

Awww, thank you for that kind advice Bolan, although I have found with my fleece jacket it is nice and warm until there is a dreaded cool/cold wind or breeze which immediately negates it's effectiveness.

If you can imagine this http://www.armytents.co.uk/accessories/wooden-table/prod_46.html  under this http://www.armytents.co.uk/dining-shelters/new-army-cook-shelter/prod_121.html this will be my sort of "day-room."  I'm therefore trying to figure out something which each of them (aged 6, 8, 10 and 13) can jump into upon waking on a cold, damp, windy morning, and be warm.

Or perhaps something like this http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/ishop/877/shopscr2147.html to throw over their pjs?

Eric.

I'd let them stay in bed a bit longer till the sun warms the tent up a bit, then they'll want to get up and it will be warmer outside.

I'd say plenty of warm clothing is your best option for 1st thing in the morning.  preferabbly lots of layers that you can peel of as you get warmer.  I always have a set of 'morning' clothes that I put on 1st thing over my pjamas to have breakfast etc before I head for the showers.

Why don't you buy them a pair of fleece trousers & a fleece jacket each? Lay these out inside their sleeping bags at night, then the fleeces will be snugly warm to put on as soon as they wake up.

Going back to the point...........

Our coldest night camping was the weekend after easter in Priddy, Cheddar.

Snowed overnight and opened the tent to a lovely silent campsite.....(see image in profile)

Lovely in a canvas I imagine, however we only had our nylon outwell, bit nippy inside and out!!

Emma
