Dear all,
does anyone have the abit of digging gullies around the tent? My wife has all of the sudden got the idea that I should do it regardless, but I totally don't feel the same urge... comments, suggestions anyone?
Thanks!!!
Done it once...in extreme emergency, when a tiny stream became a sudden torrent and the TT was in danger of being undercut. We dug a channel to turn the flow away from the tent. The warden was fine about it...he was an ex-Scout like Hubby, and he admired how neat we had been peeling the turf back first.
Used to have to do this many times at Scout camps when I was young, but can't say I ever feel the need now. If it was that wet I'd take the caravan instead and ask for a hardstanding.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.
My parents did this once on the Adriatic Coast when a huge storm meant the rain was literally flowing through the tent in the middle of the night. Only time though, and certainly can't see why you'd do it other than in extreme circumstances.
I remember when I first went camping in my frame tent over 20 years ago the warden on site made a big point about telling me I was not allowed to dig any gullies/trench around my tent. I later found out that his concern was that I was in the army and he thought that I would have army cooking equipment (burner) which needed a tranch dug for it to work......very strange !!!
Hi Sir.
Yes I think a lot of campers have been out trying to divert a sudden run off, or drain a pitch that as flooded.
But today we are blessed with things that can do the job as effectively, that is diverting a run off. Most garden sites sell plastic lawn edging that can be quickly pegged out to divert the flow of water, without damage to the field, but as Val says if you must dig then do it so you can return the field to condition as before the flood.
Alternately lift the walls of your tent stand were the water is going in and play Poo Sticks. When the rain stops and the sun comes out you can dry all your gear that got wet and Carry On Camping
Regards
Rex.
