Hi There,

We own a Gelert Alaska 6 (love it) tent that has a valance thing all around the base.

We have camped twice in rain and are still unsure whether the valance should be pegged towards the inside of the tent or should it slant outside folowing same direction as fly sheet.

There are problems with both these options -

1. if we pitch it outwards it sits on the ground and get muddy and wet on both sides and Gelert have put elastic pegging points halfway along the flysheet which means if you use them the valances get squashed. Do you use them or not.

2. if pitched inwards and attempts made to put them under the groundsheet - not easy as groundsheet supplied not wide enough! Then again they get wet and muddy but it does keep inside of tent drier. Albeit a little.

When we walk around site we can't tell what other people do. What is it there for? I can understand more it's use if when you pegged it out it pegged clear of the ground not sat on it on it. If you own an Alaska 6 or 8, all advice greatfully recieved.

Hello and welcome to the site.

We've got the Alaska 8, and after being used to a frame tent decided that they should go inside, but didn't really feel that pegging them down was warranted until it got rather blustery and we could feel a bit of a draught.  So we just put a few pegs in at our bedroom end, and it did reduce it quite abit.

Unless it really is blowing I don't think we'd bother pegging them down, It would take too long for a start and I'd need to buy more pegs, although we used the ones that it came with for the groundsheet and the bit of valance we pegged down.

We sat through a long rain spell with it and the rain only came in through the door way because our 8yo was in and out all the time.  I couldn't say that the valance made any difference because it wasn't a problem whether it was pegged or not.

Thank you so much,
