don't have the alta! but do/did use the hamer 500
Rage tents are pretty average but are ok for good weather weekends.
we did the same and bought it to try camping, our 1st outing saw the tent rip and one of the metal poles broke, but that was on a very exposed welsh site and the weather did turn out horrendous. since then the tent which tentastic replaced has been used a on a couple of trips in rain and windy conditions, and performed well! that was using delta pegs which added more stability.
I hope you find the alta up to task and you all enjoy yourselfs. Then if thinking of an upgrade your sure to find very sound advice from this site.
