I have these york mats They don't fold small, 2ft square and 6 inches deep when folded,  but if you have enough room to carry them they are really comfy. best thing I've had. i've had allsorts of airbeds over the years , from supermarket cheapies to the double height ones and they all let me down sooner or later, and such a pain to be re inflating every few nights.

Camp beds seem to be more trouble to put together.

Aldi 's have self inflating foam mats for a tenner and they are reported to be very good,

Don't let the thickness of the foam put you off.  5cm foam is really comfy compared to an airbed.

Then there are the really expensive thermarest self inflating mats. i've not tried one of these, but they are supposed to be the business, and worth the big price tag.

Thermorests are super, I have two, one for back packing and one for big family camps.  Actually the back packing mat doesn't seem any less comfy or warm that the larger one.

You need a sheet envelope to put over the Thermorest, they don't feel very nice on ones skin if you're using a duvet rather that a sleeping bag.

 You really cant beat the York Mats, cheap, comfortable, just unfold it in 2 seconds and your bed is ready, same again when packing up, best of all though theres no pumping up or any worries of punctures so they can't let you down (literally) As beefysmum says, they do take up a bit more room in the car, but well worth it.

I'd go for the thermarest, wonderful piece of kit.

Thank you all for your welcome and for all the useful advice and suggestions.  Seriously thinking about a wide or a fat airic, but then again should it be thermarest?  Like the idea of a york mat, but with 4 dogs + gear to transport space is always a premium!  Will look for a good retail outlet to have a closer look before deciding.  Meanwhile, anyone interested in 2 single airbeds or cheap self inflating mats.......................!!

Have you considered these? Much more comfy than anything inflatable!

Oh no I find those camp beds really uncomfortable  I tried them a few years back.

I have used it as a guest bed at a pinch but the 1st ones went into the bin I'm afraid.
