certain types of children make me cross, its the parents fault, they do not spend enough quality time with them and these kids seem to latch on to everyone else, usually the ones with dogs.

I just make it clear to the kid that I am very unchild friendly, they soon get the message, oh says its the look I give that could freeze all life at 5 paces!!.

When we are in our tent our dog just stays with us, door open not a problem.  When we leave the tent area we put her on her lead, keeps everyone happy.  I never have her tied to a stake or anything.  I would recommend always using the lead when in campsite, only today as we were leaving site a camper was in reception making a complaint about a camper who was walking toward the toilet block with his dog loose and not on the lead, now we also saw this but though nothing of it as the dog was right by its owners side, so it just goes to show how different people look at things, I did not hang around to see what happened, hopefully just a warning...

Most people ( us included) use a dog crate which many use for puppy training.

As well as a bed for the night which can be closed at night for the dogs safety we also use it when transporting him in the car.

We take ours dogs crate away with us as for some reason it has a massive calming influence on him. He can be as full of beans as he wants outside but as soon as that door opens on his crate he's in like a shot and fast asleep!

We also use one of the cork-screw type tethers and its very straong, our dog is a border collie and he hasnt managed to pull it out yet.

Ps I would'nt class a dog as a wild killing machine but at end of the day a dog is a dog , therefore has to make way for children , no matter how misbehaved they are.

I disagree...come kids are just unruly and need some guidelines.  i certainly put my dogs manners above many of the children we come across!  As someone else mantioned, some parents just can't be bothered to teach their kids decent basic manners and feel it is their god given right to act any way they please.  If the parents aren't receptive to a request to keep their brats at bay, I usually find a few cutting words and a 'you dare try it again' look usually does the trick!!!

Edited to say....

BTW: I do have kids of my own (24 and 13), so am not anti-kids at all but they have been brought up to have decent manners and courtesy to others (animals included)

Our lab is the excitable kind and we have been trying to get her used to camping and being calm. We have tried leaving her in the crate whilst we go to the toilet etc and she yaps but not every time and I try to explain to the neighbours that if we dont leave her she will not learn and they are always understanding. We have not left her for long periods though in case she takes it upon herself to yap for an hour or so!!! I cant seem to work out why she will setle some times and not others.

Last time we went she was doing really well and was on her tetther and kids were going past stroking her and on their bikes and she was so calm we were so proud of her. Then some yob came past and sort of roared at her and mader her jump. Then she persistantly barked at everything that went past. Including the poor little girl that had been stroking her all weekend. I never did find him or his parents !!!!

I meant as in the context that if they are meant to be on leash them they should be as children have the right to play

oh and yes kids are little brats at times lol

Agreed Steven!

I always put my dog on a lead if others are doing the same - common courtesy - and they are obviously doing it for a reason.

Sorry - didn't mean to get you all in doggy mode, but as a newbie it has made very interesting reading.

I suppose I had the view that dogs would all be controlled and be roaming around their owners tents - I now realise I was very wrong!!!!

Call me a dreamer...........................lol

I'm amazed how many parents allow their offspring to go up to 'strange' dogs ; one time I found 2 kids on my pitch trying to make friends with my 2 dogs ( tethered ) and about to open the door to my pet ferret's travel box !!!!

They had actually come into the tent to see the ferret

Makes me wonder if they do this at home too ?

My dog ( only got the one now ) is ok as long as he's not accosted as he's walking along ! He doesn't like being surprised by someone throwing themselves at him ( can't blame him really ! )
