C & C C.. Your tent certainly suffer with condesation........W-R-O-N-G.......
C & C C in my view do not like TENTS
Spent all my youth holidaying in (VANS) talk about condesation.....
Yes always use RCDs, keep plugs/sockets off the floor, and very important use the correct fuse for the appliance (which 90% of us don't).. BE SAFE.....
Actually the Association of Lightweight Campers (the small tent section of the C&CC) have been pushing for the club to take such a stand. They ALL camp in tents and are perfectly aware of the problems with condensation.
------------- There will be good days and bad days and THIS is one of them.
I think these recommendations look perfectly sensible and, one would hope, are most people's idea of common sense. I'm not a great fan of the C&CC because they are so obviously anti-tent, but I don't think this advice is necessarily part of a tent witch hunt, just some good basic outdoor electrics for beginners. I would never mess with electricity and still see my EHU as something to be handled with caution and respect, not taken for granted.
the only thing i leave plugged in whilst the tent is unoccupied is the electric cool box, and thats only 240v up to the transformer, which i ensure is off the ground.
This post has got me thinking. We EHU'd for the first time this May and I just couldn't find a way to get the unit off the floor. The tent also leaked slightly after 2 days of heavy, continuous rain (unheard of when camping!) We used our EHU to power the fridge, plus a small light and a fan heater at night. Also for charging up walkie talkies/mob phones. I was concerned about the water risk wrt the EHU. So, the idea I've had is to store/transport all the EHU/leccy stuff in a lidded plastic box. When setting up, I'm going to keep the EHU unit in the box with the lid on and feed the cables through a couple of channels I've cut in the box. So, hopefully, the lid will keep drips off from the top and the box will stop water should we get flooded. The risk now is that the unit could overheat (being stuck in a box), so I may drill several holes around the sides higher up for ventillation. Am I just replacing one hazard with another or is this a good idea?!?
Just lay the unit on a little table or something to get it off the ground or clip it on to the tent poles if you have a frame tent - that is what we used to do when we tent camped.
we fasten our hook up unit to the table leg and tie it with ties at the top of the table so it doesnt slip down and is off the floor. weve never had any problems with this in 6 years of EHU use.
We have a SIG so just lay the EHU on the floor and have a 4 gang socket running off that on to the top of the Kitchen unit where we plug in the kettle and toaster. If you don't have a SIG clip it to the leg of the kitchen unit(ours has 2 pole clips on the back and also a loop to hang it up with.
