I used t sleep on a mat years ago but far too uncomfortable. I then graduated to airbeds of various designs but got fed up of punctures, deflating in the night and being cold.
I switched to thermarest basecamps a few years ago and they are utter bliss. I agree with flluteannie about pillows though. I use gelert inflating pillows and wrap my leather jacket round it (inside out) and then a fleece.
I don't have room for real pillows being a biking camper but this works pretty well
