I'm a bit confused , do you have 18 inches less at the back of the tent as well? the motana measures 585cm, so assuming that you have the right footprint, you may not be lining the tent up over it correctly. is this what you mean?
or is it just 18 inches too long at the front and in the right place at the back?
if you peg the footprint out, then peg the 4 corners of the tent out , before you start on the poles , it should cover the whole footrint.
