I have just phoned a campsite who say they have a six metre rule with tents. Mine is 6.5m x 3m. If i chance it and turn up with mine would i get thrown off? I cant believe 50cm could make any difference to anything. Has anyone had this dilema before? I dont know whether to chance it or just book elsewhere.

I think I'd choose a different one.

I spoke to some who have strict rules, other's couldn't give a moneys.

I guess it's basic rules of commercialism Less room=more tents=more income.

I would guess that most of the highly popular ones [Right next to beaches ect] Would have stricter rules.

Sucks, but what can you do?

Johnny.

if it's camping and caravanning they will want to charge you for  an extra pitch .

They've charged me extra cos they won't put a 3 man tent and a small 2 man which usually fits at the back of our tent  ( small one occupied by 1 child )

But I have read a review on the site we're off to saying how rude and ignorant the 'warden' is , can' t wait for when we go away

Well the reviews are so helpfull! It's the reviews that have lead me to choose where I might want togo.

I'm still convinced that the more commercial the camp the worse they appear. So all should be encouraged to post reviews!!!

I think that the 6 metre rule usualy refers to the pitching distance between units (its the legal minimum distance for fire regulations) & not the size of your tent, most family tents are bigger than 6 metres on at least one side.

Phone them up & check.

The 6 metre rule means the gap between you and the next unit(excluding guy ropes)this is for fire risk. The C&C Club rule for maximum size unit on single pitch is 9m x 5m.You should have no problem no matter where/or who you camp with as your unit is only 6.5m x 3m.

In the 12 years I been regularly camping tents have gotten significantly bigger (& I'm a culprit too so I'm not preaching).

It's simple maths, a site owner can only fit half as many 6m wide tents on his (or her!) site as 3m tents. Those with huge tents should factor this in. I don't think the argument stands that the price should be the same for a 3 man dome and, say, a Monty 12 or Vango Amazon.

The only other course is to allow pitching very close together, and I know from experience that an overcrowded site is no fun for anyone.

Playing a canny game, my Vermont is only 3.3m wide, and no-one seems to mind that it's 7.4 m long. I'm also never challenged when I put up a tarp at the front for extra shelter/shade.

Actually being pedantic, if the gaps between tents remain equal then its not twice as many 3m tents as 6m tents...probably 50% more. But surely commercial camp sites have mainly fixed pitches anyway so size makes not a joy of difference, unless the tent won't actually fit? Or I guess this is where the 6m between tents rule becomes more important than actual size.

Its not 6m between tents but a 6m rule in any shape whether it be length or width. The site is flowers of may in Scarborugh where it does say on some reviews about the size. Shame it had some good reviews and now i have to go elsewhere.

Having a Hartford XL im over 7m square before I add 2m of canopy.....

I have found that if you book early enough then most campsites will try and accomodate you (also I think having electric hookup tends to put you on a larger pitch anyway as Caravans plus awnings arent exactly small!).

Paying for an extra pitch(or 50% or a pitch as I was charged at the last site I visted) is also acceptable as long as its 50% of the pitch fee not 50% of total cost ie a site whos pricing structure is pitch fee plus adult fee plus EHU etc etc.

As pointed out in an earlier post tents are becoming larger especially as familys are looking to holiday at lower cost in this country so I expect campsites to move to accomodate this.
