Hi all
A few weeks every year we read on here about the disasters caused by the wind, to family sized tents and campers holidays are spoilt and expensive equipment gets damaged some beyond repair.
Now some of this can be stopped by Preparing for these strong winds.
Choosing a pitch if possible on exposed coastal sites.
inland sites do not usually experience dangerous wind speeds but also follow this routine if possible.
Try to find a pitch close to an edge with the rear of your tent to the prevailing wind. If you don't know which direction the prevailing wind comes from and you don't have a compass look at the trees around you, you will see that they lean away from the prevailing wind.
Pegging Out. This is really the most important operation to get right, and the use of the correct pegs for the job.
The wire pegs normally given with new tents are not safe for large family tents and should not be used not even for a windbreaker, Since the development of the Delta ground Anchor many tents have already survived strong wind that probably would not have. Simplifying the design when the wind gusts, a normal peg gets the same treatment as you and I give a stick in the ground to loosen it by pulling back and forward then out,The delta pegs design does not do this when the wind gusts and the tent pulls the guy rope the delta pegs arm is lifted and the other end connected to the ground shaft is driven further in just like and anchor from a 100,000 ton tanker is held on the sand under the sea. Say no more, only ever person who uses guy ropes should in my opinion use them.
Alright you forgot to get your delta pegs and you have your guys pegged with normal pegs and the wind start to gust, your next best bet is to cross peg, take another long peg and drive it in at 90deg across the front of the guy rope peg. this will help stop the guy rope peg been pulled forward every time the wind gusts so it will stay in the ground longer.
If you have enough spare pegs this double pegging can also be done on the pegging down rubbers on the windward side of the tent.
What to do if your guy ropes attachment to your tent gives way or tears off, this is why every camper should take a pack of Clingon with them these little connecter will attach themselves to the material of the tent and you have your guy rope back, and are also useful for adding additional guys, should the wind get really bad.
Just Google clingons and order a pack or two and keep them set up in their own bag with a Delta peg ready for instant use they may save your tent and holiday.
And not quite so important but the safest and easiest way to to adjust your guy ropes is to use the Line-lok system from Cleats.co.uk.
Always carry a selection of pegs and spare guy ropes with you they don't take up that much room and may save your holiday.
It dose not cost a lot to be safe.please give it a lot of thought.
And remember that you could spend a lifetime camping and not experience very strong winds

Hi Rex
Do you recommend the plastic delta peg or the metal ones?
Also, which way do they dig into the ground? With the spike pointing in towards the tent undergrund, or away from it?
