Hi - we're off camping in a couple of weeks and I wondered what night light to get the kids (5 & 2). I guess they would love glow sticks but which ones and from where? What do others use?

For glowsticks, try either somewhere like wilko's which sell tubes of 15 bracelet types (8" skinny ones) for 99p. If you want larger quantities or the 6" stubby ones,  try kaiiak online, they seem to be the cheapest at the moment.

We have some wind up torches that we leave on the kids' pillows at night, it doesn't matter if they don't get turned off, as there's no expensive batteries to replace. Those were £5.99 in netto but you can buy them pretty much everywhere now.

I buy glowsticks in bulk on Ebay. There are loads of sellers selling them, good value and quick delivery. My kids have one every night and we also hang one on the front of the tent so we can see it when returning from nighttime loo visits.

We have one of these to use, however we do have EHU. It can be charged during the day, and then gives 4-6 hours glow, or can be left plugged in the whole time.

This is the normal nightlight my 2 have, and really does just glow rather than giving enough light that my eldest might be tempted to read by

We haven't tried glowsticks as I have never found anywhere cheap to buy them.

Hi .....just returned from great trip in suffolk and gave my children thin glowsticks from the pound shop....all was fine until one bent his to form a letter shape and it cracked sepping foul tasteing and smelling liquid into his eye..he came screaming out of the tent, luckly we had a bucket of water to hand and we sloushed his eye out. Another of our partys children slightly younger chewed hers and had got the horrible liquid in her mouth, it is really foul I can tell you. Although more expensive I would always opt for the thick stick ones never had trouble with these. Also for the first time after hearing idea on this site took solar lights and popped in tent in evening ..great idea.

I've seen adults in a night club (sorta) having swilled the initiated contents of these sticks in their mouths - looked amazing.  What worried me is that they saw nothing wrong with putting something in their mouths that 'glowed in the dark'.  What was worse was that they were all serving in the forces and you would have expected them to display common sense.  Actually!  I'll retract the last phrase! p'raps you wouldn't!

Cheers

Even the thick ones can cause problems. We once gave the kids the thick ones to play with during a circus performance, unbeknown to us our oldest then 3-4yrs old had had it in his mouth and it came apart, we all glowed, he was later gloriously sick all over and the adults had quite violent headaches that night.

The kids now know they dont go anywhere near mouths!

Even so we wouldnt do with out them hanging on the childrens bedroom zip at night, but I usually check them before use.

I have bought these:- http://www.theglowcompany.co.uk/acatalog/KRILL_LIGHTS.html

They take 2 AA size batteries (I use rechargable ones) and will last at least 14 nights.  Kids love them, even the ones who prefer complete dark.

Eric.

I always buy a packet of ten online from Lakeland . Thney are possibly more expensive but they are safe and glow really well until the the following morning. One year we made our own "firework display"  by caterpaulting different coloured ones into the air . The whole campsite cheered!! I also attach one to my kids' clothes when they are walking to the loos etc so I can see them when it is dark. Now we have a dog I may well attach one to his collar when we take him for a walk.

I've just checked out the price of these Glowsticks from Lakeland

They are £4.99 for a pack of 10  but the p&p is £3.95.

I usually order a couple of packs which comes to £13.93 in total. This works out at less than 70p each. Or if you only buy one packet it comes to £8.94 which works out at 89p each.
