Earlier in the year I bought a 10 man tent which was on offer in August and it was just for me and the dog. It was really just a bit too big for us 2.

I now have a Sprayway Valley 4 Tent. As long as I have room to stand up in it (I'm 6ft 5in), there's room for me to lay out on my airbed and an area to sit and relax on an evening.

As long as you get something practical for your own needs, size doens't matter all the time!

We have a Vermont L and there is just two of us....

And we have a Nevada M, which is smaller, but we take a utility tent for all the cooking stuff etc instead....!

Like many others, we sleep in the big bed pod and use the smaller one for our loo and storage...keep the main living area of the tent free for sitting in and spreading out.

We often camp with a couple of mates who've only got 2 man/backpacker type tents - We set up a little "corral" of tents!  We then use to our tent for eats, beers that sort of thing...

It's only too big when it won't fit in the car and becomes a total PITB to spend an hour or more putting it up or striking it for only one or two nights. Plus when you don't have room to dry it out at home easily. There's a big difference in what size of tent you need for quick weekend stops, and what you need for a two week holiday. Rule of thumb for berth size for a weekend tent is number of people plus 2, or for a week or more double the number of people for minimum berth size.

Of course, not all berths are equal. We're a family of 2 adults and 2 kids. Biggest tent we have going by berth size, is a Vango Colorado 1200dlx 12-berth. You could sleep 12 kids in it but they'd have to be small and on mats. Next one down is our Vango Oregon 800 8-berth...and surprise surprise, it will take 4 double airbeds so really IS an 8-berth. Living space is smaller though...but the big difference is that the Colorado takes an hour to put up and the Oregon takes 20 minutes. Guess which one we use the most.....

..actually, the one we use the most is our 6-berth trailer tent, which we live in for up to 8 weeks at a time. Berth size means sweet FA, to be honest. It's the living space and ease of use and the comfort when awake that's more important. Once you're in your sleeping bag on your airbed, does it really matter how big a sleeping pod is, unless it's so vast it never heats up properly? (Small low sleeping pods are significanly wrmer.) How much actual time do you spend in a sleeping pod anyway, when you're not sleeping?

we have an outwell wolf lake 7. It's just a nice size for me, hubby and 2 boys. Needed the option of 3 bedrooms, so we can seperate the 2 boys (10yrs & 6yrs) as they can be known to fight! ( suprise, suprise!!) So a nice living area is a must with 3 bedrooms for us!

We do have a large 4 birth outwell tent for those odd weekend trips we may manage to grab once in a while, when the weather's nice!!

We bought a Harford XL for 2 adults, 2 kids and 2 dogs...looked big at time but this w/end with all the rain and mud proved we were right to 'go large'. Now we want a canopy as well!!
