It's only too big when it won't fit in the car and becomes a total PITB to spend an hour or more putting it up or striking it for only one or two nights. Plus when you don't have room to dry it out at home easily. There's a big difference in what size of tent you need for quick weekend stops, and what you need for a two week holiday. Rule of thumb for berth size for a weekend tent is number of people plus 2, or for a week or more double the number of people for minimum berth size.
Of course, not all berths are equal. We're a family of 2 adults and 2 kids. Biggest tent we have going by berth size, is a Vango Colorado 1200dlx 12-berth. You could sleep 12 kids in it but they'd have to be small and on mats. Next one down is our Vango Oregon 800 8-berth...and surprise surprise, it will take 4 double airbeds so really IS an 8-berth. Living space is smaller though...but the big difference is that the Colorado takes an hour to put up and the Oregon takes 20 minutes. Guess which one we use the most.....
..actually, the one we use the most is our 6-berth trailer tent, which we live in for up to 8 weeks at a time. Berth size means sweet FA, to be honest. It's the living space and ease of use and the comfort when awake that's more important. Once you're in your sleeping bag on your airbed, does it really matter how big a sleeping pod is, unless it's so vast it never heats up properly? (Small low sleeping pods are significanly wrmer.) How much actual time do you spend in a sleeping pod anyway, when you're not sleeping?
