Hi

Picking up new tent this morning but want to try putting it up. My garden is teeny but I have read about people on here going to their local school field? Did they just go, did they ask permission-obviuosly I can't at the mo as they are all on hols.

What do I do?

Ta

Do you have a local playing field you could use? Check out the weather before you do it though, not a good idea in the rain!

I booked into a local campsite for one night, practiced all day then went home.   If you explain what you want to do they may give you a discount if you are not staying the night.

Hi,

We are lucky enough to have quite a few campsites near us. I called one and they had no problem with us pitching our tent and having a few hours to get used to it for nothing, as long as it was not during a bank holiday. We did have a school field behind us, that we were going to use to pitch the tent at a weekend but we had a lot more privacy without a crowd of kids watching us lol. The field is open during the holidays so we were not going to ask as like you no one was around. As suggested though maybe just one night away on a campsite will give you a chance to try it out ;)

Good luck

Rosey

We had a practice pitch last night of our new tent which all went well and by my reconning after much to you to me to you we can do it in an hour.

what i really want to know though and be honest, does anyone really get their tent back in the bl***y bag again, this is like flying pigs, unicorns, a black art surely, it took me longer to get it even nearly back in the bag than it did to put it up.

Were off on Friday to Devon first camping trip, new tent bulging from the bag and cant wait, rain or shine.

Hi

after pitching I have never got it back in the bag but when home and able to fold an sort properly then yes every time. I recently got a vango diablo and they come with a oversize bag which even after pitching I got it back in. My advice is take another bag to put some of it in so it does not get snaged on anything when packing up after your trip.

It's amazing how blind our caretaker is if offered a bottle of wine. We have dried our tent out at school before now.

The caretaker will still probaby be around even though it is school holidays - why not have a look around and see if you can find him or her and ask?

I've always just figured out a new tent at the campsite when the holiday starts. Although the one time outside a pub at midnight in a storm on Skye was a bit of a steep learning curve.

Glassofwine, you'll probably find there are staff in school even if it is closed.

I'm a non-teaching member of staff in a local secondary school and, though I'm off for the entire holiday, many of the admin and site staff work through. Try giving a ring or a quick visit. If it's a primary school maybe it's pretty much closed but the site manager/caretaker should still be on call and may be prepared to let you loose in the field (may cost a few beers ).

Good luck.
