If you want to try and interest your kids in board/card games then have a look at gameslore.co.uk  - they've got good writeups and age ranges.  Snap might get sniffed at, but what about Munchkin (duelling 'the monster with a name so long there's no room for it on the card' with the Rapier of Unfairness, etc, etc), Beans (good for negotiating skills), or Nodwick (fast and furious)?

My 8 year old has just got into comic books so we've just got back from touring the charity shops for old beano, whizzer n chips annuals etc. He's dying to read them - but we're saving them for our camping trip. We also take drawing pads and pens also plus mini magnetic draughts set from Asda and a pack of cards.

We take all sorts for the kids, colouring books and pens mainly for my daughter (7), lots of toy cars for my lad (3) he is car mad! We take the wifes DS for my daughter and borrow one for my lad - just in case the weather is terrible and they get bored, we do lots and lots of things together anyway whether camping or at home so if they want to use the DS we let them, they are certainly not attached to them!  Most of the time though, regardless of the weather they are out playing anyway - rain really doesn't bother them just makes it more exciting!!

What about games for the ADULTS!!  Once the kids are asleep we play cards, sometimes we play against each other on the DSs wirelessly but mainly we just talk and talk and talk which we don't get a lot of time to do at home!

I have just bought a jenga-type game from Argos for £2.48.  We will play jenga of course, but the blocks mean my little girl can build things or make a kind of domino rally.  Well worth a couple of quid.

hi

when i camp with my grandson i take outdoor stuff like cricket etc and indoor stuff like cards , drawing  puzzles i usually have some supries he doesn't know about. i find the party packs of toys  at supermarkets are good he loves the airoplanes and at pence doesn't matter if they don't last long he also likes playing with the other children and i try to take some game that could be played on the site   ie boats if they have a boating area  or tennis rackets if they have a tennis court etc he also likes nature so binoculars and spotter books go down well . hes never bored and sleeps very well lol

Hi,

Pretty much agree with everything suggested so far. Our 2 little ones (4 and 2) take their nursery backpacks with them, and they get to pack it before they go, with toys they want to take, normally little ponies etc in one and dinosaurs and toy cars in the other.

We then pack outdoor stuff, frisbee, balls, bucket and spades etc.

Asda seriously reduce their outdoor stuff at the end of the season. I bought 8 kites for 9p, yes NINE PENCE, each 5 years ago, and we used the last 3 a week ago. So once the "back to school" promotion starts, get hunting for you next years bargains. I bought rubber rings for 12p last year......still got plenty!!

Tesco value pencils(20 or 30 odd pence) and colouring pads are well used.

We have also started to buy them a "camping toy" as a treat for behaving the week before camping, which they get for the journey. A toy motorcycle and a horse were the choice for this weeks trip, and cost nearly £3. The kids have been angels since Sunday!!!

Rich

This year we took harry potter audio books. When it rained we all sat in the tent around the mp3 player (the only electrical item we took) it was a little weird when I think back all of us sat smiling in silence around the warmth of Stephen Fry's narration! Kids loved it though and they last for hours and hours! ( Library rent out audio books too)
