Are you saying that the weather is going to be gale force tomorrow? NOOoooooooooooo It was bad enough putting our Monty 6 up for the first time in still warm weather last week but gale force and rain? I suppose if I get the kids to film us we'll get a couple of hundred quid when we send it into you've been framed lol!

If you have a problem stressing you, sort it. If you can't, there's no point worrying about it coz it won't make a blind bit of difference!!!! Jules

we just got back from a weekends camping with weather that was said to be warm, breezy and some rain showers.
well that meant gales which snapped 2 tent poles and non stop rain, thank god i found a use for the tennis raquets they came in very handy to push the tent roof up when huge puddles formed.
my poor tent is in a battered state but she did us proud as we all huddled inside,we very nearly gave up but i was determined to get my moneys worth.they got one thing right it was warm lol.

Aye...me too. What a two nights that was !! We pitched up at Bolton le Sands and directed to a pitch miles down the field right on the perimeter and at the bottom of a steep slope, within hailing distance of Mr Branson's fine Pendolino trains and the all night roar of the A6 trunk road. The wind was a howling banshee and the rain came down like stair rods so much so I was convinced the ground was turning to mud and not even Delta pegs would prevent us from becoming airborne. All was well in the end though and the pegs hadn't moved an inch but the all night flapping of the tent wasn't very helpful to a restful night's sleep. Thank goodnes for Delta pegs and the Portapotti.

Well, I am a realist, not one of these wishful thinkers who think that "climate change" is a con to enable a Labour Government to impose stealth taxes. Therefore, I no longer camp on a whim, but check every conceivable piece of weather information before I set off and then consult my own intuition.

However, I have just got back from Keswick (Lake District) after just two nights. I went along to attend a family and friends meet up. I was going to stay there until at least until tomorrow, but after leaving the pub in Braithwaite last night under a sheet of rain, to witness water gushing 3 feet out of drains, thunder, lightening and a waterlogged campsite, I gave up. My brother, sister-in-law, niece and some friends were already there, but were coming back today, so I hitched a lift home. Fortunately, since climate change, I never book more than a single night at a time and won't even entertain sites that impose a two or three nights minimum, so I haven't lost any money.

Nevertheless, all wasn't bad news. People with cheap tents who had spent the night in their cars had dumped their Ebay tents by the bins, so we left with a good selection of footprint material by cutting out the inner ground sheets!

Sounds like Red Bank Farm, that slopes something else aye, we to were in the far corner last week with howling wind and rain, enjoyed it though

I think the secret is to get there on Thursday and snaffle the top corner behind the hedge

Hi dave
It is a shame for families who have not been informed of the ability and facts of the tents they propose to buy,
And human nature been what it is will normally go for the cheapest option, there are very few if any lightweight tents tunnel or dome will stand up long to a full blown gale with winds from 39 to 46 mph even a strong breeze 25 to 31 mph will damage and brake most pole system if not correctly pegged out rear to the wind.
But is it their job to tell you if you don't ask, Cross camping tell is customers what to expect from the tents he sells, why cannot all retailers do it.
Regards
Rex.

We bought a canvas frame tent. Will we be at the same risks as the nylon dome style tents in the event of winds/storms?

We camped at Woodlands near Dartmouth last May and had Force 10 gusting 11 gales.

Monty 12 didnt budge an inch. No ingress of water. Just a lot of noise and flapping.

Following day, lots of tents by bins! Did notice an Argos Pro Action 8 standing upright tho! Quite impressed considering my Pro Action Nevada 5 is rubbish!!!

Never mind, just got Colorado 5 instead.

It is sad tho when you just cant wait to go camping and the weather just lets you down. (again and again and again......)

This raises some interesting questions, the primary one being :-

Is there a guide somewhere on how to pitch correctly!?!?!

Thats a good question.

We are off to Lowther tomorrow for 3 days but luckily, (looking at the weather),  in a relatives static but on Friday we are booked into the Vale Of Pickering site. The first time with our new tent and have had no time or decent weather to practice pitching it so any guide would be helpful.

Although if this weather keeps up i can see us not risking it which would be a real shame.

the frame tent that you have should stand the weather a bit better than some of the light weight family tents but it is not infalable, and rember the suncanopy that you have bought is just that and if it is windy take it down

it always amazes me that a frame tent stands the weather  at all because it is a large flat slab of canvas that is streched over a pole and if i am not mistaken that is how you make a sail

Thanks Forceten. Looks like you have the same tent I have. Funny you mentioned the sun canopy...are you a psychic or is it a co-winky-dink you mentioned it because I just bought one off ebay a few hours ago!

I bid on the same canopy that is how I knew you had just got one

I have got the canopy for the 7DL and it is a bit bigger than the 6DL but fixed with a couple of extra guy lines it looks ok and is navy blue, I thouhgt it would be nice to have the correct cannopy for the tent

Oh sorry! (very red faced here) I know the guy selling it has another one but it was green I think. I haven't seen many accessories for the Litchfield Vermont anywhere. It was just an off chance I saw the canopy on ebay.

I also got my tent off ebay. Someone has a bunch of new ones he's selling for £150!

I have had my vermont 6DL for a couple of years now and it has been used quite a bit and it is a great tent

lichfeild no longer sell that tent and all the ones that are about on e bay are end of line so you were very lucky to find the right canopy for your tent witout to much much bother

I have been scanning e bay for a cheap second hand vermont 6 as a couple of my frame spiders are bent and could do with replacing, but that guy you bought yours from auctioned a couple of those tents and struggled to get £100.00 for them but the last couple of second hand ones that have sold on e bay made more than he was getting for the new ones   .
