If youve got a calor depot/plant in your area take it in there and seek advice. I'm not sure what the one you've got looks like but when I've been to our local place I've been quite suprised to see all the different brands and colours of , particulalry 4.5kg, bottles lines up for either scrapping or painting up.

Not criticising any of them because they have rules to work to but I've always found its the retailers who are a bit precious at times.

Thanks for the advice folks. After a bit of "googling"  Totalgaz kept redirecting to a French site. there is a total depot nearish but all it seems to deal with is household oil. I will give the local independant gasman a ring next week and seewhat he says.

The local tip is a good idea but have tried before to no avail
