Thanks for all your replies and help.

My friend got a new a class last week - have been out in it over the weekend. I don't like it , as it is so much smaller inside than the old shape one I have. She upgraded from old shape also and is moaning about the same.

I have decided (I think) on a focus c-max. They have good reviews and it is not 'as big' as some of the other lovely cars you have suggested. The storage space seems really good.

I have been weighing this up against the Golf plus another not so big, big car which has a high driving position.

Can I get it in time for the weekend - if not were crammed into an alfa 156.

C-Max is an excellent choice. They're better put-together than Volkswagens these days, and are best-in-clas for child protection in a crash.

They do come in for critcism for not having 7 seats, but cars with 7 seats don't have room for a pencil case with all seats in action!

That sounds just whats needed (when they are behaving)

I only have the 2 smalls, with a  'hell will freeze over first' attitude to any more. 7 seats would of been good for (other peoples children), for friends after school and footie training. But I don't have a dog and more space for bits and bobs have presidence over 7 seats.
