Hi, very new to camping with my 2 children and 3 dogs. We have been just once in the torrential rain a week ago and loved it despite being very muddy and on a fairly unfriendly dog site!

We are thinking of going to the River dart Country park next year in the summer and meeting up with a friend so we want pitches next to each other near the dog walking area and with EHU close by. The site looks great but I've read it gets very busy and booked up in the summer months.

So how far in advance can you book? I mean what is the done thing when booking a pitch? Can you request what and where you want with some sites?

Are there other sites with such great play equipment for the kids? The ages of the accompanying children will be 11,10 and 3

That will depend upon the site.We tried to book easter time three years back at a site 6 weeks in advance i tried for EHU .I even tried to get on the cancellation list and there was a 6 week wait on that too!! Call the site and ask them .If you have a lok in the 23 above you can read the reviews before you book.Best of luck

Same as suns said, it depends on the site, the all singing all dancing site that are popular get booked up months in advance at holidays and bank holidays, many people choose the sites that have things for kids

We go to sites that are little known and have minimum facilities, outside the usual holiday periods and weekends we sometimes book the day before, if you need something quick it may be better to compromise and let your children make their own entertainment, cheap badminton set, swingball, football etc (but not round other peoples tents), it's amazing how kids will enjoy simple games, sadly too many have lost the knack to be inventive and explorative

Maybe a farm site where they can observe the animals?

Thanks Caster. My kids would love a farm site but the thought of mud and animals in the rain...well, not sure! The other issue is the amount of stuff we may need at a site with minimum facilities. I am a single parent so have to pitch the tent and do everything myself and being quite new to camping I feel a bit safer going to the better equipped sites for now! My girls are real outdoor children so will fit in anywhere but not sure I will until I get the hang of putting up a tent, making sure my 3 yr old doesn't leg it, dogs are safely pegged to the ground (you know what I mean), my 10yr old has stopped whinging that she wants to go and explore NOW and all done in the rain slipping and sliding in the mud....once I have mastered that then I think I will be ready to be a real camper! But I have to say we had the best family holiday ever and both girls agree

I would suggest that you would actually feel safer on a small site.  If you go for an all singing and dancing site, I have read lots of reviews about drunken louts, so personally if I was camping on my own, I would go for a small site.  We have camped with kids of all ages and ours havent needed any fancy entertainment, just some sticker books and bits and pieces that are especially for camping.
