Our local area sent out a questionaire several years ago now asking parents how we felt about reducing the 6 weeks summer break down to four and having extra time in October and February I think. Nothing ever came of it. Whatever happens, even if Gordon Brown said tomorrow that schools will be open during these weeks and closed during these weeks, tour operators and campsites will change their pricing structure to maximise their profit during the peak school holiday season. As I said before, these people aren't in it for the fun of it, they do it to make a profit and that is just business. Their season is limited and they need to maximise their profit when they can or face closure. I think when greed takes over it's abhorent, such as BP petroleum announcing record profits when we're all suffering the fuel hikes. Maybe even the large tour operators are guilty in the same way but I bet if you asked most small site owners if their profits were large enough to be able to charge the same all season they'd probably say no. I'm not condoning their actions but someone has to play devil's advocate and I can see why they do it even if I DON'T agree with it so please don't shoot the messenger! You could always look upon it that they reduce their prices out of season to encourage campers all year round, rather than being disgruntled about higher prices in peak season. The glass is half full rather than half empty kinda thing.

If you have a problem stressing you, sort it. If you can't, there's no point worrying about it coz it won't make a blind bit of difference!!!! Jules

We took our kids out for two weeks a few years back. We had a bit of grumbles from the school but it did get an OK in the end. Interesting thing though, was that it was December. Holiday was really cheap and tourist type place almost empty.

When the kids went back to school we found out they had not done alot, been watching DVDs and playing games etc. This was because the teachers were busy clearing walls and classrooms for the new term.

This year we took the kids away in May/June. The first week of our holiday was end of term so not cheap. The second week was alot cheaper since the schools had gone back. It happened that the schools had a teacher training day on the Monday so I only had to book 4 days.

This year I have 2 starting secondary. Am not sure yet what to do as we really can't afford out of term prices. Luckily we now have a tent, but I think with careful planning and working out when the schools ar going to be doing the least work you can get a cheap holiday and keep the schools happy.
