I'm looking to get a new small dome tent for overnights, but most I've looked at so far (e.g. Wynnster Prarie 4) are HH 2000. Our Wild Country has a HH 4000.
Can anyone tell me - just how good is HH 2000 compared to what a normal UK Summer throws at it ?
2000HH should be ok for an overnight dome tent. Rain tends to run off a dome as there is not usually a flat area for it to lie on, and any leakage is normally through the seams.
I have used a 2000HH dome tent on many occasions and it has withstood seriously torrential rain for continuous periods. As Bernie says its the seams you want to worry about, and that applies to any tent.
On a quality tent, 2000mm will keep out anything. My "cheap" tent, the Gelert Nakina Plus shown in my Gallery, which I use when conditions are so bad it might mean depositing a tent in a bin, has an advertised HH of 1500mm and yet has never let a single drop of rain through the flysheet in some horrendous conditions.
1500HH is the acceptable, so 2000HH will withstand anything the UK "summer" can throw at it. Most leaks in a tent are from faulty seams, not through the actual fabric.
have used a flashMk 3 (pop up tent) with 2000hh in torrential over night rain and it didnt let a drop in. I think we sometimes can get paronoid about HH. Overall quality is far more important. I have owned many tents and any leak I have had has been through a faulty seam (usually easily rectified)
My Snugpak is 2000HH and apart from the seams (which i later sealed again) i was more than impressed by the amount of rain it withstood over the few trips we've had this summer 24hrs of rain at one point. I can confidently say it should be fine. LOL
