As a family of 6 including 2 teenagers and one approaching his teenage years, I am looking for advice on what to purchase. At present we are using a borrowed 9 man tent which although serves our purpose, it does take up a lot of room in the car which considering the amount of stuff we need to take can be a bit of a problem.

The other idea we thought of is to use two  4 man tents one for the kids and one for us. My concern about using two tents that would we be charged double pitch even though they would be side by side.

Any advice on what to go for?

Yes, you'd be charged double for two four-man tents.  They'd both be counted as main tents. You are usually allowed to use a pup tent on your pitch on payment of an additional charge but these are generally required to be very small 2 or 3 man tents, used for sleeping only and with no living space.

Also, the average 4-man tent has very minimal living space normally. Where are you going to keep all your living kit etc in a 4-man? Where would you sit on a wet evening?

My suggestion is to look for a more compact 6 or 8 berth, then get a 3-berth pup tent for your two eldest to sleep in. Just remember that berth sizes are only nominal....they are based on sleeping mat widths ie 50cm  while a single airbed is 70-80 cm approx, and a double is 140cm.

We use this set up for us and our teenage son. We dont need to pay for 2 pitches because the smaller tent is classed as a pup tent - even though its a spacious vango delta 3 man. Thats in the C&CC sites though.

Cool campers use Delta Pegs.
