Hi simonamyjakeuk.

I looked at 3 way fridges, and almost went for a Waeco CAB-40 (grey) as it went to a lower temp than the cheaper Waeco CAB-40B (blue), in the end I ended up with a Waeco CF-25 as a brand new one came my way(preloved), for the same price as the CAB-40, also the size of the CAB-40 was to bulky, the CF-25 only runs on 12/24 or 240 volts, so no gas option, so will have to run of car or EHU, it depends also were you intend to go, 3 way fridges are of the absorbtion type and go only to below the ambient temp, which is fine in UK, but may be an issue in very hot climes, the CF-25 is a compressor fridge, and works much the same as a domestic fridge, you are able to set the temp for what you require, even as low as minus 18C for use as a deep freeze if needed.

Hi there!  the saying "you gets what yous pays for" rings very true for 3 way fridges...

There have been quite a few threads about these sort of fridges and the best ones to have are the ones that cool 30 degrees below the ambient temp, so even when its sunny outside (and hot in your tent!) your food stays chilled...

We've got a Waeco CAB40 one in grey and yes, it did cost us big money (was £189 reduced to £149 in a sale on tinternet), but its one of the best bits of kit we've got.

We've run ours on gas and EHU and if memory serves, the fridge "eats" 13g of gas an hour, so a 907 cylinder lasts 4-5 days.

They are really good at keeping things cool, in fact, you have to turn it quite low, otherwise things near one side of the fridge will freeze!  We keep a fridge themometer in ours to keep an eye on this.

this is the time of year where you might also pick up a bargain on internet or ebay...

Happy hunting!

Hi simon.
three way absorption fridges are not controllable like a domestic compressor fridge the gas can be lowered on cold days to save gas but the temperature is controlled by the ambient temperature. So the fridge with the best insulation will keep your food cooler. You will be wise to search for a three way fridge that will cool to 30 Degrees Centigrade below ambient or outside temperature that way your fridge will practically always keep your food below 3 deg for safety.
Regards
Rex.

Personally I would have separate gas bottles for the cooker and the fridge.  For one, if you decide to move the cooker to a different location then you don't have to move the fridge as well; and absobtion fridges have to be dead-level to work off gas.

I have a Dometic 1600 which I bought off ebay second hand for just under £80.  Keep looking on ebay, be patient and you can get a bargain.  Do go for one that can cool to 30 degrees below ambient, just in case we ever do get a summer here.

I get far more than the 4-5 days out of a 907 calculated by Frizbomb; more like 2 weeks.  But it does depend on how hot the weather is which affects how much work the fridge has to do and, therefore, how much gas is consumed.

Hi Guys

I have this one...Waeco Super Combicool 3 Way Fridge.  Follow link..on offer now for £135 which is a bargain.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.riverswayleisure.com/acatalog/3WayAbsorbsionFridges.html

Runs fabs of gas, had it running on one of those Patio Calor gas bottles for four days and the needle hardly moved on the gas dial.

Best thing I have bought (mmmm cold beer ). Bought it its own clip on regulator and hose so just unclip it, connect the stove with its regulator, cook me tea  and then reconnect to the fridge, just move the gas, not the fridge.

Cheers

We have a Groenland 3-way fridge which we bought second-hand ten years ago - it's brilliant

We've used it on mains & on calor gas, but you can also use camping gaz. On calor/gaz it only has two settings, but on mains it has eight settings. It makes ice cubes and keeps everything perfectly cool - in fact too cool sometimes! On one camping trip, hubby forgot to turn it to the lower gas setting, and the following morning we had to defrost the milk before we could have a cuppa

I would say yes - make sure its the grey one that cools to 30C and not the older Blue models.
